BOCA RATON, Fla. – Middle Tennessee held No. 21 Florida Atlantic off the scoreboard for more than five minutes to start the game Thursday night, but the Owls' discipline shone through in a raucous Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena for an 85-67 win. MTSU saw a four-game winning streak come to an end Thursday as FAU won its 19th in a row.
The Blue Raiders (13-8, 6-4 Conference USA) jumped out to a 5-0 lead as FAU (20-1, 10-0) missed its first five field goal attempts of the night. The home squad finished the night with just seven turnovers and nine personal fouls, compared to 15 turnovers and 17 fouls by MTSU.
Eli Lawrence led the Blue Raiders with 17 points. Jared Coleman-Jones brought down a game-high 10 rebounds. Camryn Weston's three rebounds paced his team.
By the Numbers
5:12: The Owls' five-minute, 12-second scoring drought to start the game was their longest of the year.
10: Coleman-Jones' 10 rebounds were a career high.
17:07: The Blue Raiders did not attempt their first free throw until the 17:07 mark of the second half.
Blue Raider Notes
Thoughts from Head Coach Nick McDevitt
"They [FAU] make life tough on you. They really do. They're good. They're old. They take care of the ball… We only forced seven turnovers and blocked two shots. We're usually a lot higher than that in those two categories, so it speaks to how tough they are.
"I didn't think we were tough enough. I didn't think we were out there playing soft, but I didn't think we were tough enough to beat a team like that on the road in this kind of environment with the way they were playing."
