Florida Atlantic Pulls Away Late Over Blue Raiders
3/24/2023 9:36:00 PM | Baseball
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Middle Tennessee Baseball had cut an initial four-run deficit in half, but the Florida Atlantic Owls hit a grand slam in the seventh inning to create permanent breathing room in a 13-5 win over the Blue Raiders on Friday night.
MTSU outhit the Owls 17-13 at FAU Baseball Stadium, but also committed four errors in the loss. The Raiders fall to 11-10 with the series-opening setback and are now 2-2 in Conference USA action.
Seven of the 13 FAU runs were unearned Friday night.
The Blue Raiders did draw first blood in the contest. C Briggs Rutter connected on his first home run of the year in the opening frame to give the Blue Raiders an early lead on his three-run homer.
FAU would quickly gain the lead however, scoring four unearned runs in the bottom half of the first, three of which came on their own three-run homer.
The Owls would tack on another unearned run in the third and then scored a pair in the fourth to stretch their lead to 7-3.
Middle Tennessee responded with a couple of runs in the fifth, on a Jeremiah Boyd double and a bases-loaded single from Jackson Galloway.
FAU capped their night with an RBI single in the eighth inning.
By the Numbers
2.0: RHP Patrick Johnson allowed zero earned runs over a pair of innings. It was the first career start from the freshman from Chattanooga, Tenn. Ollie Akens and Justin Lee added another two frames each, while Bryant Beranek and Kota Sato both added one inning each.
15: MTSU left 15 runners on base, stranding the bases loaded in both the fifth and sixth innings.
4-4: SS Brett Coker was 4-4 on the night, with two runs and a hit-by-pitch.
Blue Raider Notes
2B JT Mabry and Coker extend their hitting streaks to 17 and 13 games respectively. These represent the longest such streaks among all Blue Raiders in 2023.
Each member of the Blue Raider starting lineup reached base Friday night.
Middle Tennessee outhit its opponent for the sixth straight game. With a pair of matchups where the Blue Raiders were tied with their foes in hits leading into this six-game stretch, the most recent time they've been outhit was March 5 against Toledo.
The Blue Raiders' 17 hits are the second-most for the team this season, only producing more base knocks last Tuesday at Tennessee Tech (18).
