Blue Raiders Drop Midweek Contest at Georgia State
4/11/2023 6:11:00 PM | Baseball
DECATUR, Ga. – Middle Tennessee Baseball was within a pair of the Georgia State Panthers for much of Tuesday's road matchup at GSU Baseball Complex. However, an unearned run surrendered in the eighth gave the Panthers separation that they held onto, as the Blue Raiders fell 5-2.
The loss snaps a six-game winning streak MTSU carried into the non-conference matchup.
Georgia State scored first in the bottom of the second, but the Raiders responded in the top of the fourth with a Jackson Galloway two-out, opposite-field RBI single.
After the Panthers made it 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, MTSU tied the contest again on a JT Mabry RBI double.
GSU took the lead once again a half inning later with a two-run homer.
LHP Jake Cothran gave the Blue Raiders 2.1 quality innings out of the bullpen, striking out a pair of batters in the seventh. The southpaw recorded the final out of the fifth to strand a pair on base, and retired the side in order in the sixth.
By the Numbers
2: RHP Jalen Wirtz started on the mound and went two innings, allowing one run and striking out a batter.
5: The Blue Raiders used five throwers out of the bullpen. Daniel Dewey tossed 1.2 frames in direct relief of Wirtz, Bryant Beranek took the decision with one inning pitched, and Kota Sato, Cothran and Jack Julian made late game appearances.
.192: The Panthers hit just .192 as a team Tuesday, and logged no hits with two outs or with runners in scoring position.
3-4: 2B JT Mabry was 3-4 on the afternoon with an RBI double.
Blue Raider Notes
Tatsunori Negishi made his first start of the season, manning first base. It was the first time the Raiders deviated from the same starting infield combination used in the season's first 30 games. DJ Wright would pinch hit for Negishi in the sixth and remained in the game at first.
Galloway has reached base safely in 11 consecutive games.
