Blue Raider Rally Falls Just Short in Series Finale
4/16/2023 2:58:00 PM | Baseball
SAN ANTONIO – Middle Tennessee Baseball was seeking to salvage this weekend's series at the UTSA Baseball on Sunday. Trailing 5-0 after seven innings, the Blue Raiders scored two in the eighth, two in the ninth, and had the go-ahead run at the plate with two outs. But the Raiders were unable to escape San Antonio with a win, falling 5-4 at Roadrunner Field.
MTSU now sits at 17-17 and 8-7 in Conference USA.
The Raiders pushed two runs across in the eighth inning, when Briggs Rutter brought home Luke Vinson on an RBI groundout before Jackson Galloway scored Eston Snider on a single.
In the ninth, Snider doubled down the left field line to bring in Vinson and JT Mabry. However, MTSU ran out of outs with the tying run in scoring position.
The Roadrunners scored four runs in the first inning and another in the third to open Sunday's action.
RHP Ollie Akens came out of the bullpen and delivered five shutout innings for the Blue Raiders, allowing just four baserunners.
The Skipper Speaks
"We got behind, but Akens did a good job of holding UTSA and giving us a chance at the end. We got the two runs in the eighth, and then we had an opportunity and made it very interesting. It just wasn't good enough, we gave them some opportunities early and they capitalized. Even though we played like what I thought was very well after that, it was too little too late," said head coach Jerry Meyers.
By the Numbers
2-5: Brett Coker was 2-4 Sunday and went a combined 7-12 across all three games at UTSA. Snider also went 2-5 with a double and two RBI.
1-3: Rutter was 1-3 with an RBI, a double and a hit by pitch.
7: Snider recorded his seventh outfield assist of the year on a play at the plate in the second inning. He leads the team in outfield assists this year.
Blue Raider Notes
Tatsunori Negishi earned his second start in four games, at first base.
Galloway extended his on-base streak to 14 games and has the team's longest current on-base streak.
Next Up
After seven straight games on the road, the Blue Raiders return home to play seven of their next nine at home, and nine in a row in the midstate.
MTSU will play a home-and-home two game series this week against Lipscomb. First pitch from Reese Smith Field is set for 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, with the Raiders playing at Lipscomb on Wednesday night.
The Blue Raiders will return to C-USA play on Friday to open a three-game series at home against Rice.
