A 12th inning home run was all that separated the Blue Raiders and the Owls
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee softball dropped the rubber match against Florida Atlantic in heartbreaking fashion on Sunday, losing in 12 innings after a 12th inning solo home run gave the a 3-2 lead late at Blue Raider Softball Field.
The Blue Raiders (24-10, 5-4 C-USA) held a one-run lead, 2-1, going into the top of the seventh after an inside-the-park home run off the bat of Laura Mealer in the bottom of the sixth, but the Owls (22-14, 5-4 C-USA) rallied, doubling with two outs and scoring on a single the very next batter to tie the game.
MTSU's best chance to win the game would come in the bottom of the 10th, when their first two batters of the frame got on base and were bunted over to second and third by Shelby Echols with only one out. A failed squeeze play led to Lexi Medlock being caught in a rundown, however, and a Laura Mealer groundout ended the threat.
Gretchen Mead was sterling on the mound, coming in the second inning in relief of starter Keri Munn. The veteran pitched 7.1 innings on the afternoon, allowing one earned run, six hits and striking out seven Owls. Kamryn Carcich was the hard luck loser after a strong 3.2 innings in relief of Mead, allowing just three hits and one earned run.
By the Numbers
13: Runners stranded for MTSU in the circle. FAU was able to load the bases twice in the first two innings and MTSU got out of both jams by allowing only one run. The game winning run came on a home run with the bases empty.
7: Strikeouts for Mead in the circle. The Fifth-Year right-hander kept the Owls off balance all day, allowing just one run across 7.1 innings of work.
312: Combined total pitches between the four pitchers who threw for both teams. FAU's Gabby Sacco threw 123 pitches in the complete game, while Mead was just behind with 119 pitches.
Reaction from Head Coach Jeff Breeden
"What I told our kids was that I thought we wasted an excellent pitching performance today. I thought Mead was excellent and I though Kam was excellent. We didn't have enough offense, we didn't string enough offense together to produce a win. Our offense, sure 100 percent for a fact, let our pitchers down."
