Blue Raiders Ride Sixth Inning to Win at Belmont
4/25/2023 8:53:00 PM | Baseball
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – All nine batters came to the plate in the sixth inning of Middle Tennessee Baseball's 8-4 win over the Belmont Bruins Tuesday night at E.S. Rose Park, as the Blue Raiders scored five in the frame to take a five-run lead that wouldn't be relinquished.
Jackson Galloway singled with runners in scoring position, DJ Wright doubled in a pair of runs with two outs, and Gabe Jennings and Luke Vinson each drove in a run in the inning.
Wright's double was part of a 2-3 day with two extra base hits, two RBI and a walk. Scoring two runs himself, the graduate student accounted for half of MTSU's runs Tuesday.
With the win, the Blue Raiders move to 21-19 and have won four of their past five games. They also clinch a season series split with Belmont after falling to the Bruins in Murfreesboro on February 28.
Eston Snider led the game off with a single and came around to be the game's first run, advancing on a wild pitch and two ground outs, including on a Brett Coker RBI.
The Bruins added runs in the second and fourth innings before the Blue Raiders made it 2-2 in the fifth, off a Luke Vinson sacrifice fly.
Even after the Blue Raiders took their sizable lead in the sixth, Belmont did not go away quietly. The Bruins cut the margin to 7-4 with a pair of two-out RBI in the eighth. But MTSU would promptly respond in the top of the ninth with a Jerimiah Boyd bases loaded walk. Eriq Swan, making just his second bullpen appearance this season, finished the game on the mound with a scoreless ninth.
The Skipper Speaks
"Everything is big. Everything is important. But having that sense of urgency is a factor. I made that point before we got started today. Whether it's a league game or not, everything is important. Coming out of league play last weekend and going into league play this weekend, momentum is a factor. We're trying to get better and not have any letups.
"We had a five-run inning and that obviously helped us, but with as many replay delays we had, we had to grind it out and stay focused, keep trying to execute pitches and have good at bats. We did enough of that tonight."
Player Perspective – 1B DJ Wright
"I was just trying to get back to the basics, seeing the ball up front and attaching early in the count."
By the Numbers
.400: MTSU batted .400 with runners in scoring position.
2-4: Snider was 2-4 with a walk.
3.0: RHP Daniel Dewey tossed three innings Tuesday in his second start of the season. The sophomore struck out a pair while allowing one earned run.
2-0: RHP Jalen Wirtz earned his second win of the year with his two-inning appearance. He allowed a run in his first frame but no additional damage.
2.2: RHP Justin Lee pitched 2.2 innings, allowing one hit and one run.
Blue Raider Notes
MTSU is 7-0 when Wright has multiple RBI.
With a hit in his fifth consecutive game, Snider holds the team's longest hitting streak as well as maintaining his longest streak of the season. Tuesday night was the seventh game in a row the outfielder has batted in the leadoff position.
