Blue Raiders Erase Two-Goal Deficit at Tennessee Tech
9/17/2023 8:37:00 PM | Women's Soccer
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee Soccer overcame a two-goal deficit in the final 20 minutes Sunday night at Tennessee Tech to secure a 2-2 draw in the final minutes.
In the 73', Sadie Sterbenz finished a ball on a corner kick with a goal on a volley to get the Blue Raiders on the board. It was the first Blue Raider goal for the freshman from Clarendon Hills, Ill.
Still trailing the Golden Eagles with four minutes to play, Eleanor Gough fired a hard shot past the Tennessee Tech goalkeeper and into the back of the net at the edge of the 18-yard box to seal the result.
Goalkeeper Hannah Suder had four saves to keep MTSU in the match after halftime.
The Golden Eagles scored twice in a 10-minute period to bookend halftime, in the 42' and 50'.
Rhoden's Roundup
"I am proud of the response we showed after going down two goals and against the run of play. I thought we controlled most of the game against a solid Tennessee Tech team and could have taken all three points," said head coach Aston Rhoden.
Player Perspective – Sadie Sterbenz and Eleanor Gough
"It feels awesome to score my first collegiate goal, thanks to Lauren [Spaanstra], the ball was amazing. I'm just happy I could do it for my team, to help us get out of our losing streak," said Sterbenz.
"I just took the shot, and when I saw it ripple the back of the net, the relief and the joy that came over me and when everyone came over to me just felt amazing. I came out fighting. I wanted to do well for the team, so when the ball hit the back of the net, I couldn't have been happier," said Gough.
