2/25/2024 1:03:00 PM | Women's Tennis
Murfreesboro, TENN. —Middle Tennessee State's (8-6) women's tennis team picked right back up where it left off Friday, riding the wave of momentum it created itself in the sweep of Tennessee State and Eastern Kentucky to pick up it's third win of the weekend over Troy (5-3) 5-2 at the Adams Tennis Complex Sunday morning.
The Blue Raiders didn't waste any time out of the gate, winning the doubles point. Sana Garakani and Rutuja Chaphalkar moved to 2-0 on the year with a 6-3 win on court two and Lilly-Sophie Schmidt and Ilaria Sposetti clinched for the Blue Raiders on court three with a 6-2 win.
The singles action came fast and furious, with MTSU's Cassidy Mataia defeating Hagar Ramadan-Amin 6-2, 6-0 to give Middle Tennessee an early 2-0 lead in the match. Nearly back-to-back, Sana Garakani won her eighth singles match of the season on court one to put Middle Tennessee up 3-0 before Troy got a point back to make it 3-1.
Redshirt junior Ilaria Sposetti clinched the win for the Blue Raiders to cap off a great afternoon following her doubles clincher. Sposetti won her fifth singles match of the year 6-3, 6-3 over Valeriia Avdeeva to give the Blue Raiders a 4-1 advantage.
After falling in her first set, MTSU freshman Lena Peyer came back to pick up her team-high ninth singles win of the year 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 and give MTSU it's fifth and final point of the match.
Interim Head Coach John Kries
On the momentum the three-win weekend provides: "Every time you win, it helps with confidence. We got three in a row this weekend, so the girls should feel good about that. We've played really hard and it shows the results of all the girls hard work."
Player's Perspective: Redshirt junior Ilaria Sposetti
On clinching both doubles and singles to give MTSU it's third win of the weekend: "It's important to win doubles, and I'm getting along really well with my partner (Lilly-Sophie Schmidt). This is the second time that we've been able to clinch doubles, and that's good because it gives the team the strength to go into singles better. I was really happy with singles, today, too because we really needed these three wins. I'm really happy about my game and I think it was just really big to win today."
