Blue Raiders tied for first through first round in Statesboro

Four players par or better in the first round, including leader Owen Stamper
STATESBORO, Ga. — Middle Tennessee men's golf finished the first round of the Schenkel Invitational tied for first place Friday with a score of 277 (-11). Four of the five Blue Raiders were par or better in the first round, led by Owen Stamper at 66 (-6).
Stamper is tied for the individual through 18 holes at Forest Heights Country Club. He picked up an eagle and six birdies Friday, including birdies on each of his final two holes and three of his last five.
Kevin Jegers fired a 69 (-3) in the first round, ending the day in a tie for sixth. He amassed five birdies, including three in a row on holes 7 through 9.
Michael Barnard carded a 70 (-2) Friday and heads into the second round tied for 12th. He made four birdies and was over par on only one hole.
Markus Varjun shot a 72 (E) to end the day tied for 36th. MTSU dropped Luke Perkins' score of 73 (+1).
The first round saw cloudy conditions early that turned into thunderstorms, delaying the completion of the round with one group left on the course.
By the Numbers
277 – MTSU was one stroke shy of its lowest team round of the season.
66 – Stamper's 66 marked the second-lowest round by a Blue Raider this season.
6 – Jegers has been at par or better in six of his last seven rounds.
