MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee softball (16-20, 4-6) was led by the long ball on Thursday night to claim the series opener over FIU (13-19, 1-6).
FIU jumped out to an early three-run lead in the top of the first with a three-run home run. Bailey Grossenbacher would hit her fourth long ball of the year to tie for the Panthers team lead.
MTSU would take over the lead with a five-run second inning. Ava Brooks would hit a three-run home run to tie the game up and scored Claire Czajkowski and Lexi Medlock. Shelby Sargent would then hit a two-run home run to give the Blue Raiders the lead. That would be Sargent's fourth home run and 15th RBI of the season.
Kamryn Carcich would deliver the third home run of the game for MTSU to extend the lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the third inning. The Blue Raiders would total seven RBI in Thursday night's game off of home runs.
The Blue Raiders would add two more runs in the fourth inning for their third consecutive inning with at least two runs. Amaya Harris would hit her first triple of the season that scored Sargent who got on-base with a walk and extended the lead to 8-3. Blevins would then add another run with a single that scored Harris.
In Carcich's 14th start of the season and 10th win she allowed just three runs in the first inning and then threw six scoreless with five strikeouts. Her 10 wins rank second in the Conference just behind the league lead of 11.
"We had a good team talk before the game tonight and made some changes to mindset," said Carcich. "Going out there tonight with my teammates felt fun and relaxing even when things were tough. Playing as a team with intent allowed for me to good on both sides of the plate."
