MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee softball (18-25, 5-11) would drop the series opener to Liberty (24-16, 13-3) on Friday night.
MTSU started the scoring early in Friday night's game after a throwing error by the Liberty defense allowed the Blue Raiders to plate one in the first. Amaya Harris would double in that first inning for MTSU's only hit through five innings.
Kamryn Carcich started in the circle for MTSU in the series opener and held the Flames scoreless through the first two innings.
Liberty plated its first run of the game in the top of the third to tie the game at one apiece. A two-out single to right field would score the runner from second for the Flames fourth hit of the ballgame.
The Blue Raider threatened in the bottom half of the inning after two consecutive walks but would leave two runners on-base to keep the game locked at one.
The Flames captured the lead in the top of the fourth with five runs to take a 6-1 lead.
Mary Martinez would take over for Carcich in the circle to get out of the fourth inning.
Martinez tossed a scoreless fifth frame to bring up the top of the Blue Raiders lineup trailing by five. The second hit of the game would also be a double, this time from Julia Garcia in the bottom of the fifth. The seventh base runner of the game was left on-base by MTSU after five innings.
Ava Brooks singled up the middle in the bottom of the sixth for a late game baserunner for MTSU.
The Blue Raiders were unable to get anything going against the leading strikeout pitcher in CUSA. Freshman Kaylan Yoder added seven more strikeouts to reach 97 on the year. The Flames five-run fourth inning was too much for the Blue Raiders to overcome in the series opener Friday night.
Offensively Harris led the way with a double and two walks in Friday night's game. Garcia and Brooks also delivered hits in the series opener.
