No. 36 Blue Raiders celebrate senior day with win over Tulane
4/14/2024 3:05:00 PM | Men's Tennis
Murfreesboro, Tenn.—The Middle Tennessee (17-9) faithful began to clap in rhythm with the players on the court, all eyes on the second doubles court. After a seesaw battle of a match, senior Javier Cueto Ramos and his doubles partner, Marcel Kamrowski, gutted out an important tiebreak 7-6 (5) over Tulane's (7-13) Benji Jacobsen and Billy Suarez. It was the crowning moment for the Blue Raiders in their 5-2 win on senior day over a familiar foe in the Green Wave.
#26 Leo Raquin and Ondrej Horak moved to 2-0 on the year against ranked doubles teams, picking up a huge 6-3 win over #74 Luc Hoeijmans and Alex Bancila to provide the momentum for the Blue Raiders second doubles team to clinch the doubles point.
In singles action, Shu Matsuoka and Leo Raquin both won in straight sets less than a minute apart to give the Blue Raiders a 3-0 lead. For Matsuoka, it was his 13th singles win of the year and Raquin won his team-high 16th of the year. Jakub Kroslak clinched the match on court five with a 6-4, 7-5 win to move to 11-3 on the year in singles. Marcel Kamrowski rounded out the day with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win to give him his eighth singles win of the year.
Middle Tennessee celebrated the accomplishments of seniors Leo Raquin, Demis Taramonlis and Javier Cueto Ramos after the match.
Raquin has put together one of the greatest single seasons in program history, achieving a #26 ranking in doubles and a #32 ranking in singles with a combined 32 wins on the season, thus far. Raquin has over 150 combined wins in his career and has solidified himself as one of the country's top overall talents.
Taramonlis became a mainstay in the back end of the Blue Raider lineup this season, adding depth to a team that was in desperate need of it following the departure of last year's senior class. Taramonlis has contributed nine singles wins on the year and was a former All Big-South Conference player.
Javier Cueto Ramos is another important depth piece for Head Coach Jimmy Borendame's squad, especially in doubles play. Counting today's win, Cueto Ramos has contributed nine wins in doubles play and was a top division two talent prior to his time at MTSU.

On the grit it took to win today over an opponent MTSU has seen four times in two seasons: "Today was a battle. It was warmer and windy. (Tulane's) had the same team for almost four years. They have four seniors and two juniors, I think, right now. It was great to scrap that one out. The doubles point was huge. It was nice to find a way to sneak that out."
On the impact this senior class has made despite them all being here one season: "It's a tough situation for everyone. They have to come in and join the team and my expectations are probably different than their old coaches. There's an expectation to be a leader, too, because they've been around the block and we have a lot of young guys. They all did a good job and had a smile on their face. I got better at understanding how to work with them and they did with me. It's come together really nicely as we're number 36 in the country.
Player's Perspective: senior's Leo Raquin, Demis Taramonlis and Javier Cueto Ramos on what MTSU has meant to them.
Raquin: "It's meant a lot to me. I came here expecting to be in the lineup and I've played one singles and doubles and have been ranked as high as 18 in singles and 26 in doubles. I made a lot of friends, which is most important, I think. (Javier Cueto Ramos and Demis Taramonlis) are my roommates and I think a lot of those guys. The coaches have helped give me a lot of confidence and I'll always remember everyone here forever."
Taramonlis: "When I first came here, it was a friendly environment. It's always hard to start somewhere new, so that meant a lot. With everyone's help, I got through. It's been great to play with these guys. It's been a lot of fun. I still plan on being around next year to hang around the guys. I just love Middle Tennessee and all it's done for me."
Cueto Ramos: "I felt like I was meant to get here four years ago, so it was good I had a space here for me this year to do my masters. I got to compete with one of the best tennis programs around. We've worked really hard and we aren't done yet. I want to see how far we can go in the (NCAA Tournament)."
