Blue Raiders fall to Governors 16-10

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee splits the season series with Austin Peay after falling 16-10 on Tuesday evening at Raymond C. Hand Park.
The Blue Raiders (13-27, 4-11 CUSA) struck first in the opening frame, plating a trio of runs on Trace Phillips' 10th home run of the season. The Governors (24-16, 11-7 ASUN) answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning and proceeded to take a 7-3 lead after adding five runs in the second. After each squad tallied a run in the third, MTSU added another in the fourth, however, Austin Peay exploded for four runs to extend its lead to 12-5.
In the fifth, both squads matched each other again with one run apiece. The Blue Raiders found an offensive spark, plating two runs in the sixth on a Brett Vondohlen solo home run and Luke Vinson RBI single and two runs in the seventh on a Vondohlen two-RBI double to cut the deficit the three.
In the eighth, the Governors used a pair of solo home runs and an RBI single to extend their lead back to six. Austin Peay would go on to win 16-10.
On the mound, Dylan Alonso (0-1) was tabbed with the loss, while Soloman Washington (1-1) earned the win for the Governors and Adam Walker picked up his first save of the season.
By the Numbers
9: The Blue Raiders' pitching staff struck out nine Governors on the evening.
8: Eight different Blue Raiders tallied a hit on the day. Gabe Jennings and Briggs Rutter led the way with a trio of base knocks, while and Trace Phillips, Jared Vetetoe and Brett Vondohlen each logged a pair of hits.
3: Three Blue Raiders left the yard on the evening, Trace Phillips with a three-run shot in the first, Jared Vetetoe with a solo shot in the fourth and Brett Vondohlen with a solo shot in the sixth.
