MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee women's soccer team (3-4-0) returns home following a two-match road trip to face the South Alabama Jaguars (4-3-0) in a midweek matchup at Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium.
History vs. South Alabama
Middle Tennessee enters this week's matchup with South Alabama with an all-time record of 9-3-2 against the Jaguars in program history. Last time out, the Blue Raiders defeated the Jaguars 2-1 during the 2012 season in quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference tournament.
About Middle Tennessee
The Blue Raiders fell in their previous outing to the Vanderbilt Commodores in a 3-0 loss in Nashville.
The Commodores made it difficult for the Blue Raiders to generate a positive result on the scoreboard, keeping a clean sheet by controlling the midfield and the time in possession.
The first scoring opportunity of the night went to the way of Vanderbilt with a shot by Caroline Betts, forcing an early save from Middle Tennessee goalkeeper Demi Gronauer.
The Commodores struck first with a goal in the 16th minute of the opening half with a goal from Rachel Deresky, coming off the assist from Betts.
Middle Tennessee midfielder Megan Carroll would create the first opportunity for the Blue Raiders in the 38th minute, which forced the first save of the night from Vanderbilt goalkeeper Sara Wojdelko.
Vanderbilt struck the woodwork with an opportunity on the stroke of the halftime whistle with a shot from forward Addie Porter in the 43rd minute, hitting the right post.
The home side would take a one-goal advantage into the intermission after Deresky's goal in the early going.
Derseky would add a second goal to her tally for the day with a goal just three minutes into the second half with the assists credited to Betts and Maci Teater, giving Vanderbilt a two-goal lead.
After a video replay and a ruled handball by defender Sadie Sterbenz in the 63rd minute, a kick from the penalty spot was awarded to the Commodores. Leading goalscorer Sydney Watts stepped up to take the opportunity from six yards out, but the shot was turned away by Gronauer diving to the bottom left corner, keeping the scoreline at 2-0.
The Commodores would come right back with another scoring chance in the 64th minute of the match, this time with Betts ending up on the scoring end of the goal, putting the home side up 3-0.
The match would finish 3-0 to Vanderbilt, dropping MTSU to 3-4 on the season with just one match remaining until the start of Conference USA play.
The Blue Raiders finished the 90 minutes in Nashville with no goals on the night on three attempts, including two on target.
Middle Tennessee will look to return to the .500 mark with a win at home against South Alabama, in what will be the Blue Raiders final match prior to the start of Conference USA play on Sept. 19 against FIU at Dean A. Hayes Stadium.
