MURFREESBORO, TENN. - Middle Tennessee men's and women's cross country will be competing in the Southern Showcase hosted by Jacksonville State on Friday, September 13.
With 52 men's teams and 55 women's teams competing, it is one of the biggest collegiate meets in the country. The Blue Raiders participated in this meet last year and did well finishing in fifth and sixth in the men's and women's race. This year the Southern Showcase includes teams such as Alabama, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, and Vanderbilt.
MTSU is returning the third place runner in this event last year in Brian Kiptoo. He ran a 23:36.90 on the 8k course in Huntsville finishing third out of 300 Individuals in the meet.
Eight runners will be competing on the men's side for the Blue Raiders: Brian Kiptoo, Sammy Sang, Jacinto Gaspar, Allan Kiplagat, Brendan Nagle, Quinn Deguira, Juan Lucas de la Fuente, and Carmelo Cannizzarro.
On the women's side, MTSU brings seven runners to Huntsville: Hailee Gorham, Eleanor Towe, Lauren Cole, Emma Thomas, Odilia Jepchumba, Nancy Maiyo, and Sandra Maiyo.
The race will take place at John Hunt Cross Country Park in Huntsville, Ala. It has developed a reputation as one of the fastest and best cross country courses in the country, and has played host to NCAA Conferences, Regionals, and the 2023 NJCAA National Championship. The championship caliber cross country course is a 10-meter wide, manicured grass surface course with multiple spurred loops that is well prepared for both a 5k for the women and 8k race for the men.
The meet will start at 9 a.m. CT for the men's 8k and followed by the women at 10 a.m. for their 5k. The forecast for the showcase is scattered showers on Saturday morning.
