Coffman and Espinal shut down Radford offense
LEESBURG, Fla. — Middle Tennessee Softball defeated Radford 4-1 in the final game of The Spring Games to continue their momentum after a victory last night.
MTSU (3-2, 0-0) shut down the Radford (2-3, 0-0) offense en route to victory with Tori Coffman and Jesyne Espinal dominating on the mound. Coffman got the start in this afternoon's game and went five innings, allowing one unearned run before Espinal came in for the save, allowing just one hit over two innings. Today marked the first save of Espinal's collegiate career. The two pitchers are off to great starts, with Coffman carrying a 2-0 record and a 0.54 ERA while Espinal is 1-0 with a 0.88 ERA, to go along with the save.
Offensively, the Blue Raiders were making every at bat tough for the Radford pitching staff by only striking out once throughout the entirety of the game. Junior Lexi Medlock had a terrific day at the plate going three for three with a run scored. Freshman Jana Want continued the historic start to her collegiate career, batting two for three and recording a walk, raising her batting average to a monstrous .563. Addy Edgmon appeared all over the scoresheet by recording a hit, a walk, a run scored, an RBI, and a stolen base.
Middle Tennessee currently has four student-athletes with an above .300 batting average in Jana Want, Lexi Medlock, Macie Harter and Anyce Harvey. As a team, the Blue Raiders have a combined .271 average, compared to a .254 average for the opponents. On the pitching side, both Tori Coffman and Jesyne Espinal both have a sub 1.00 ERA. The pitching staff has a combined 2.40 ERA compared to a 3.80 ERA for the opponents.
When asked about the terrific start to her Blue Raider career, Tori Coffman said the following: "The defense behind me helps out a ton and allows me to stay calm throughout the game. We are very happy with the start to the season, but there are still things we can improve on to become the team we know we can be."

The Blue Raiders will be returning to Florida next weekend (Feb. 14-16) for the Jacksonville/North Florida Tournament. The tournament will have three other teams competing: Jacksonville University, North Florida and UConn.
