Blevins, Medlock and Pendergrast go yard
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee softball took down the Lipscomb Bisons, 6-3, on Wednesday, April 9.
The Blue Raiders (19-21, 7-8 CUSA) showcased their power Wednesday night as they made life difficult for Lipscomb's (19-20, 6-6 ASUN) pitchers. The Bisons jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning before Ansley Blevins smashed a solo home run to even the score in the bottom half. It was Blevins' 12th bomb of the year.
Lipscomb scored two more runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead—but that was before the Blue Raider bats woke up. Jana Want scored on an error after reaching base on a single, and Sabria Ritto hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Lexi Medlock and even the game at three. The tie was short-lived, as freshman Lilly Pendergrast smashed her second career home run to give MTSU a two-run lead.
Lexi Medlock added an insurance run in the sixth inning with a solo shot to center field, bringing the score to 6-3—where it would stay. It was Medlock's second extra-base hit of the game, bringing her season total to 11.
Jesyne Espinal entered in the fifth inning with a two-run lead and shut the door on the Bisons' offense. Over three innings pitched, Espinal allowed just one hit and lowered her ERA to 4.42. The sophomore also owns the lowest WHIP on the MTSU pitching staff, at 1.37.
When asked about her performance, Espinal said the following: "It felt good to close out the game, all glory to God. The defense had my back and the offense put a bunch of runs on the board for us."
