Middle Tennessee Falls 4-3 at Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee (5-1) dropped its first match of the season Thursday night, falling 4-3 to Vanderbilt (5-1).
Starting the afternoon with doubles, on court three, the first match to wrap up, junior Birtan Duran and freshman Antoine Mayoral dropped a 6–0 decision to Vanderbilt's No. 42 pair of Danil Panarin and Jack Satterfield.
Middle Tennessee answered court two, where Eric Crivei and Jonasz Dziopak earned a 6–3 win over Nathan Cox and Callum Markowicz. The match went back and forth early, but with the overall score sitting at 4–3, Crivei and Dziopak stayed steady and held serve to give MTSU its first doubles win.
The deciding point came on court one, as no. 18 Karim Al-Amin and Ondrej Horak pulled out a hard-fought 7–5 win over Pablo Martinez Gomez and Hoyoung Roh. MTSU led 4–3 before Vanderbilt won two straight games to even the score at 5–5. Al-Amin and Horak then broke serve to go up 6–5 and sealed the match on a deuce point, clinching the doubles point for the Blue Raiders.
Going into singles, Mayoral fell to Vanderbilt's Cox on court five, 6-1, 6-4. After dropping the opening set, Mayoral showed resilience in the second, breaking serve to take a 3-2 lead. Cox responded by leveling the set at 3-3 and later pulled ahead at 4-3 before closing out the match with a 6-4 win.
On court four, Crivei was the second player off the court, dropping his singles match to Satterfield in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Satterfield built a 5-2 lead in the opening set before Crivei responded with two straight games to close the gap to 5-4. Satterfield then shut the door to take the first set, 6-4. In the second set, Crivei earned a game in the third, but Satterfield pulled away with a three-game run to close out the match. This is the first singles match that Crivei has lost this season on court four.
Al-Amin was the third player to finish his singles match, falling to Vanderbilt's Roh, 7-5, 6-2 on court two. The opening set featured back-and-forth play, with the Blue Raiders and Commodores tied five times, though Al-Amin was unable to gain the lead. In the second set, Al-Amin cut the deficit to 3-2, but Roh responded with a three-game run to seal the deal.
Vanderbilt clinched a 4–1 victory over Middle Tennessee in a three-set match on court three. Dziopak fell to Vanderbilt's Panarin, 6–1, 4–6, 6–4, after fighting back to force a deciding set. Dziopak rebounded from a first-set loss to take the second and held a 4–3 lead in the third before Panarin closed the match with a three-game run.
Singles action continued in court one, where Horak earned a comeback win against No. 62 Martinez Gomez, 6–7 (4-7), 6–4, 6–2. After narrowly dropping the first set in a tiebreaker, Horak settled in and took control of the match, winning the final two sets to secure his second victory this season over a ranked opponent.
Finally, court six senior Freddy Murray won his singles match 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (12-10), beating Markowicz. After the first set, Murray won the second set, and the third set went into a tiebreaker to 10.
