DALLAS – Following a stellar regular season sophomore campaign, Isabella Johnson has been voted Conference USA Most Improved Golfer, as announced by the league office Thursday afternoon. In addition to the superlative, she was also named First Team All-CUSA based on her Scoreboard player ranking.
The sophomore's selection to First Team marks the first for Middle Tennessee since Hanley Long in 2019 and is just the second Blue Raider ever named Most Improved, joining Caroline Caudill in 2022. Johnson was selected as an individual qualifier to the NCAA Louisville Regional last week as the youngest Blue Raider and the second ever selection.
After completing the Conference USA Championship, the Murfreesboro, Tenn., native sits atop the single season record books with a 72.32 scoring average and 17 rounds at par or better, both shatter the previous records.
A year removed from averaging 75.63 as a freshman at Tennessee, she has dropped her scoring average by over three strokes. With a low 18 of 72 and a low 54 of 219 a year ago, the sophomore has far and away improved that with a 68 low 18 and 212 low 54. Her best finish as a Lady Vol was one top-25 place at 23rd, while she has amassed 10 top-25 finishes this season, five top-5 and two top-3. With 17 rounds at par or better to date, Johnson improved her results from last year 17-fold, recording just one as a freshman.
The sophomore was the low finisher for the team on all but three occasions. With 31 countable rounds out of 31 played, she is as reliable for the Blue Raiders as they come, leading the team in birdies (89) and rounds in the 60s (4). Johnson's lowest finish of the season came at the Inverness Intercollegiate in second place on one of the most difficult courses Middle Tennessee played this season.
