Shaun McKinney enters his first season as the coordinator for basketball relations on Head Coach Rick Insell’s Middle Tennessee women’s basketball staff.
His responsibilities at Middle Tennessee include collaborating directly with Coach Insell to help cultivate a competitive NCAA Division I Women's Basketball program. This role involves coaching student-athletes during practices and games, providing personalized skill training, recruiting both academically accomplished and skilled players, and fostering community engagement. Key responsibilities encompass managing communication with university officials, coordinating travel logistics, overseeing recruiting efforts, executing community service initiatives and NCAA Life Skill programs, as well as nurturing athletes' personal growth for their university and community roles.
Additionally, McKinney will evaluate eligibility transcripts, maintain digital platforms, orchestrate game day recruitment activities, and liaise with various stakeholders, ensuring adherence to NCAA guidelines, while mentoring athletes, enforcing NCAA compliance, and contributing to team events and fundraisers.
McKinney comes to Murfreesboro after serving as a graduate assistant on the Michigan State women’s basketball staff. While in East Lansing, he contributed to player development, travel operations, recruiting efforts, and also played a key role in developing OER (Offensive Efficiency Rating) and scouting reports, while organizing and coaching the scout team. McKinney played a key role in helping guide the Spartans to a 16-14 record, including an upset win over third-ranked Indiana.
Prior to his time at MSU, McKinney spent three seasons as an assistant men’s basketball coach and video coordinator at Grand Valley State University, an NCAA Division II institution, helping the Lakers achieve a successful 52-25 record. While at GVSU, he worked with NCAA DII All-American Jake Van Tubbergen – the first Laker to earn such honor in 11 seasons – as well as helped develop four student-athletes who are currently playing overseas professionally.
McKinney’s journey in collegiate basketball began at Olivet College, an NCAA Division III institution, where he served as the video coordinator and director of scouting for the men’s basketball program. During his time at Olivet, he developed and organized a recruiting database, assisted in coordinating travel arrangements, and oversaw all social media content.
Originally from Laingsburg, Michigan, McKinney graduated from Michigan State with a bachelors degree in communications in 2018.
He is married to the former Courtnee Sellers of Oxford, Michigan. The couple has one dog, Laker.
