Veteran collegiate women’s basketball coach Kim Brewton begins her 15th season with the Lady Raiders in 2024-25 after joining Head Coach Rick Insell’s coaching staff in July 2010.
Brewton’s experience is one of the many assets she brings to the Blue Raider bench. She has been highly successful in women’s basketball, both as a player and an assistant coach.
At Middle Tennessee, Brewton’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, recruiting, scouting, coaching guards and day-to-day preparation of the Blue Raider basketball team.
During her time at Middle Tennessee, Brewton has helped transform the Blue Raider backcourt, including developing some of the top guards in program history. In fact, Brewton has coached eight position players who are in the program’s 1,000-point club – Ty Petty, Kortni Jones, Icelyn Elie, Anne Marie Lanning, Olivia Jones, Anastasia Hayes, Jalynn Gregory and Savannah Wheeler.
Anastasia Hayes was named Conference USA Player of the Year following the 2020-21 season after finishing second in the nation in scoring with 26.5 ppg. Anastasia Hayes was C-USA Newcomer of the Year in 2019-20. Standout guard Savannah Wheeler was a first-team All C-USA performer in 2022-23 and a Player of the Year candidate. Wheeler would go on to be named CUSA Female Athlete of the Year, First Team Mid-Major All-American, CUSA Player of the Year, CUSA Tournament MVP and CUSA First-Team All-Conference in 2023-24.
Dor Saar was named Second-Team All C-USA after finishing first in the conference in 3-point FGs per game (2.6), 3-point field goals made (90) and 3-point field goal percentage. The transfer from Maine had an immediate impact on the 2021-22 Lady Raiders in her one and only season wearing Blue.
Brewton has developed three C-USA Freshmen of the Year (Olivia Jones, 2014; Taylor Sutton, 2018; Aislynn Hayes, 2020). Hayes became just the second player in program history to be named Freshman All-American when she was honored by Her Hoops Stats in 2019-20.
Additionally, Brewton’s guards also have been named C-USA Newcomer of the Year twice with A’Queen Hayes being honored in 2019 and Anastasia Hayes garnering the award in 2020.
Under Brewton’s direction, Aislynn Hayes was a seven-time C-USA Freshman of the Week honoree in 2019-20. The seven honors are second most for a player in league history. Aislynn Hayes also became the only player ever to be named United States Basketball Writers Association National Freshman of the Week three times during the 2019-20 season. Sutton and Anna Jones also received USBWA National Freshman of the Week honors during their time with the program.
Brewton was instrumental in working with Kortni Jones, who made the transition from point guard to shooting guard and developed into the most prolific shooter in program history.
Kortni Jones set single-season school and conference records for 3-pointers made (115) and attempted (329), placing second nationally and tying for 10th on the all-time NCAA list for conversions. Jones also became the first MT women’s basketball player to earn an invitation to the State Farm 3-Point Championships in 2013.
Brewton also helped develop guard Brea Edwards into one of the nation’s premier shooters in 2016-17 when she finished second on the single-season 3-point field goals list with 98. Edwards was a first-team All C-USA selection and the Tennessee Sports Writers Player of the Year in 2016.
Another of Brewton’s guards, Ty Petty, blossomed into one of the best to play her position at Middle Tennessee. Petty became MT’s single-season assist leader in 2015-16 with 195 helpers on her way to first-team All C-USA honors. She was also MVP of the C-USA Championship. Additionally, Petty was a 1,000-point scorer, finished second on the career assists list with 540.
Shanice Cason stepped into the starting point guard role for 30 games in 2011-12 as the team’s point guard and led the squad in assist/turnover ratio. Meanwhile, walk-on Caroline Warden became a go-to player during the Blue Raiders’ successful run to the Sun Belt Conference regular season and tournament titles that same season.
Middle Tennessee has enjoyed its top shooting performances from beyond the perimeter during Brewton’s tenure. The Blue Raiders have connected on 200-plus 3-pointers 14 times in program history, and 10 of those have taken place during Brewton’s 12 previous years.
Prior to arriving in Murfreesboro, Brewton spent six seasons, 2004-05 through 2009-10, as an assistant for her father, Rick Reeves, at Gardner-Webb.
While with the Runnin’ Bulldogs, she was the team’s recruiting coordinator and helped bring in a nationally-ranked class in 2007-08. The program tallied just five wins the year before she was hired but registered a school-record 28 in 2009-10, including 16 consecutive, on its way to the first Big South regular-season crown in school history and a WNIT berth. She coached Margaret Roundtree to Big South Player of the Year accolades, while three others made the all-conference teams during her tenure.
The Lynchburg, Va., native spent the 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons as the administrative assistant and radio color analyst at Southern Miss. She completed her master’s degree in sports administration at Southern Miss in 2002.
Brewton was a three-year letterwinner at Liberty in Lynchburg, Va., where she played for her father for two years. The Flames won three-straight Big South titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament three times, including the 1998 campaign, in which they were 28-0 entering the field only to be stopped in the opening round by top seed and eventual national champion Tennessee.
She graduated Summa Cum Laude from Liberty in 2000, earning her bachelor’s degree in sports management.
Brewton is the mother of two daughters, Grace and Kalyn. She is married to Eric Brewton. They have one son, Gabriel.
