MONROE, La. - Middle Tennessee softball opened its 2002 season with a 2-1 win over Troy State at the Mardi Gras Classic, on the campus of Louisiana-Monroe, Friday afternoon.
Senior pitcher Jennifer Martinez threw a complete game allowing just three hits, one run and fanned five batters. She also helped herself at the plate by going three for four.
Middle Tennessee struck first to start the game as catcher Lindsay Azevedo hit a single to send home second baseman Lisa Sherman. Troy State tied the game when shortstop Sammi Wilkes took a Martinez pitch to left field and out of the park.
The crucial play in the game came when centerfielder Kip Phillips moved from first to third on a single by Martinez. A wild pitch by Troy State's Cassie Wilkenson sent Phillips home and proved to be the game winner.
Middle Tennessee will play Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 10 a.m. Saturday and then will face host Louisiana-Monroe at noon. The Lady Raiders will enter pool play beginning at 5 p.m.
