MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The 25th ranked Middle Tennessee men's tennis team put together a dramatic come-from-behind effort to upset No. 23 Georgia Tech, 4-3, at home on Sunday. The Blue Raiders improved to 7-0 on the season and are now setup for a key match at No. 12 Mississippi State on Wednesday.
"We were very fortunate to win the match today," head coach Dale Short said. "We had another great last match comeback to give us the win. It says a lot about our team because good programs find ways to come out on top."
With the match tied at 3-3, Georgia Tech's Stephen Moros owned a 4-1 advantage over Michael Staniak in the third and final set. Staniak, like he has done many times before, didn't give up and won five straight games to take the third set 6-4.
In other singles play, No. 2 Robert Gustaffson defeated David Wright 6-0, 6-4, while Oliver Forman downed Joao Menano, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3. Foreman is ranked No. 97 in the nation. At No. 5, Kirk Jackson defeated Wes Nott, 6-2, 7-6 (9-7). The Blue Raiders No. 1 player, Daniel Klemetz, dropped a hard-fought match to nationally-ranked Roger Anderson, 6-4, 6-4.
The Blue Raiders lost the doubles point for the first time this spring.
Middle Tennessee will return home with consecutive matches against Memphis on March 2 and Virginia Tech on March 4.
