MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The 2003 spring season is scheduled to open at Miami, FL on Monday for the Lady Raider golf team. The Golden Panther Women's Championship will be held on February 10-11. Event host Florida International will be the only Sun Belt team besides MT competing in the event.
Junior Tamara Munsch, the team's top golfer the past two years, will lead the Lady Raiders from her No. 1 position to begin the spring campaign. Munsch led the team last fall with a scoring average of 77.5, including a low round of 71 at the Memphis Women's Intercollegiate.
Sophomore Kristin Lynch, who played in all five fall events, was next in line behind Munsch with an average of 79.7. Lynch was the team's top finisher at the Lady Razorback Invitational with a career-best showing of sixth place. Amanda Harter, Kandace Burnett, and Kemmerlee Pennington will round out the last three spots. Harter and Burnett played in all five events this past fall, and Pennington competed in the Lady Razorback Invitational where she turned in a three-day average of 83. Harter was the Lady Raiders' top golfer at the Unlimited Potential Bay Tree Classic.
Head Coach Rachel Moore is excited to get the spring season underway. "Everyone has had good leadership, and hopefully that will carry over into the spring season," comments Moore. "We have had to prepare for the spring season by going indoors most of the time due to the bad weather we have experienced. We finally got outside this week a little, but we are still behind some of the Florida schools who have been able to hit the course more than we have."
The season opener will be the first time the Lady Raiders have been to the resort course in Miami. Coach Moore explains what the team focuses on when not being familiar with the course. "All you can do is play. We know some things, such as the elevated greens, so we can prepare for challenges like that during practice."
As far as the rest of the field is concerned, FIU and Georgia State seem to be pretty evenly matched with the Lady Raiders when scoring averages are concerned.
MT and FIU will be the only two competing Sun Belt teams in the event, but Moore talked about the competition in the Sun Belt for the spring season. "New Mexico State is the top team in the conference," explains Moore. "Arkansas-Little Rock and Denver should be strong again this season as well. The conference is well balanced from top to bottom, with scoring averages very similar from the teams ranked 4-8 from the fall."
