Lady Raiders Sweep Lipscomb
3/31/2004 7:01:00 PM | Softball
The Lady Raiders' defeat of Lipscomb in game one was won in dramatic fashion. With the game tied 1-1, and the possibility of extra innings looming, the Lady Bison pulled ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth off an RBI single by pitcher Sara Meek which plated Kristen Tidwell.
Middle Tennessee came back in the top of the sixth and tied the game off an RBI single by Muriel Ledbetter, which scored Kristina Hieb who got on base after being hit by a pitch. After Cortney Mitchell drew a walk to load the bases, Angie Huebner came to bat and hit a ball to the left side, which caused a Lipscomb error. Two runs scored on the error and the Lady Raiders took the game 4-2.
Junior hurler Crystal Bobo picked up the win and improved to 6-8 on the season. She allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out four.
In the second game, Middle Tennessee took the early lead in the top of the second inning when Candis Littrell hit an RBI single to plate Huebner and take a 1-0 lead. The Lady Raiders came back in the second inning to add two more runs when Mitchell sent a homerun 230 feet over the centerfield wall. It was Mitchell's fifth homerun of the season and she moved into fifth place for homeruns in a season.
After pitching 3.2 innings, pitcher Ashley Frizzell was replaced by fellow freshman Trish White who got the third out to end the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fifth inning, with a runner on third, White was called for a balk, which sent in Lipscomb base runner Megan Olsen home. Muriel Ledbetter replaced White who struck out Lady Bison Lauren Parker to end the inning.
Frizzell returned to the pitching mound in the bottom of the sixth with Lady Bison runners on first and third. A hot shot liner to second base was snagged by Mitchell in the hole and she forced a double play when she alertly tossed the ball back to first baseman Brittany Herald to pick off Julia Davidson and end the Lipscomb threat.
The Lady Raiders tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Michelle Wilkes and Candis Littrell recorded back-to-back singles with one out and were sent home off a two RBI single by Ledbetter.
Frizzell got the win and improved to 3-0 on the season. She went 5.1 scoreless innings allowing one hit and striking out two.
Middle Tennessee returns to action on Tuesday when the Lady Raiders travel to Birmingham, Alabama to take on Birmingham Southern. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
