The women's team dropped a tough 80-76 decision to defending national champion and No. 1-ranked Maryland Friday in front of a record crowd of 10,010 at Murphy Center. Newcomer Amber Holt tallied a game-high 28 points and freshman Chelsia Lymon came off the bench to score 13, including six in a 10-2 run late in the contest that put Middle Tennessee ahead by five points with five minutes to play.
Senior all-everything guard Chrissy Givens netted 14 points, 10 in the first half, and also contributed seven assists and three steals.
Middle Tennessee has split a pair of games with South Dakota State over the last two seasons, with both teams winning on the road. The Jackrabbits won 58-56 at Murphy Center in 2005 before the Blue Raiders returned the favor last December, 79-72, in Brookings, S.D.
After tonight's outing, the Blue Raiders and head coach Rick Insell play four of their next five games on the road, including this weekend's Subway Basketball Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. The squad takes on Maine Saturday and either Princeton or the host Golden Gophers Sunday.
Middle Tennessee's next home game is Friday, November 24, versus Chattanooga at 7 p.m.
