AUBURN, Ala. - Middle Tennessee softball (0-5) fell 9-3 to Lipscomb and 3-2 to Jacksonville State in the second day of action at the War Eagle Classic Saturday at Auburn University.
The Blue Raiders fought wind and cold all day and even had to weather an hour and a half delay during their game with Lipscomb. Middle Tennessee played two of the three games that were able to move forward in the tournament.
In the first game of the day, Middle Tennessee fell behind early when Lipscomb scored three runs in the top of the first. Freshman hurler Samantha Floyd made her first appearance on the mound going 2.2 innings and gave up two runs and five hits.
The Blue Raiders tied the game in the third inning. Muriel Ledbetter picked up her first extra base hit of the season when she tripled to lead of the inning. With one out, Melissa Weiland walked which set up Lebetter's score on a wild pitch. Weiland scored on a Bison error for the second run of the inning. After Jennifer Dorais got on base, thanks to a fielder's choice, she scored on the third Lipscomb error of the inning.
After the long delay, due to rain, Middle Tennessee and Lipscomb returned to action and the Bisons came out with a vengeance. With freshman Laura Moore on the mound, who came in for Floyd in the third inning, Lipscomb unloaded for five runs and then added one more in the sixth to clinch the game. Weiland led the Blue Raiders going 2-for-3 and scoring one run. Moore took the loss allowing three runs on six hits and fell to 0-2.
In the second game of the day, against Jacksonville State, the Blue Raiders dropped a heartbreaker in its second extra inning game in as many days. Jacksonville State struck first with a homerun by Maigin Alexander to lead off the second inning.
The Blue Raiders tied the game in the third inning. With one out, Michelle Wilkes singled to left and then got into scoring position when she stole second. With two outs, Ledbetter hit an RBI single which plated Wilkes.
With two outs, Brandi Boehner started a Blue Raider rally in the top of the sixth when she singled to right field. Martha Davis advanced Boehner to third when she singled to right field and then Boehner scored when she stole home. Jacksonville State regained the lead when Daniela Pappano scored off a Blue Raider error.
After a scoreless seventh inning, Middle Tennessee and Jacksonville State went into extra innings. It would be the Gamecocks who took the game when Becky Carpenetti hit an RBI single to score Allie Barker who was placed on second per the international tie-breaker rule.
White took the loss on the mound and drops to 0-2. She allowed five hits and just one earned run, striking out five. Wilkes was 3-for-4 in the game and scored one run.
Middle Tennessee will face Furman Sunday at 9 a.m. in its final game of the tournament.
