MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee's 19th-ranked women's basketball team will host Western Division leader Louisiana-Lafayette Sunday at 2 p.m. at Murphy Center, as the Blue Raiders look to break the school record for consecutive wins.
Head coach Rick Insell and his squad have won 15 straight games, tying the school record set in 1987. The Blue Raiders have played just one home game in the last three weeks, winning five of their last six outings on the road.
Insell says UL is the best team Middle Tennessee has faced so far this season in the Sun Belt Conference. The Ragin' Cajuns enter Sunday's game 17-5 overall and 9-2 in league play.
"This is the best team we've played since Tennessee back in November. They're very athletic and long," Insell said. "They really handled Western Kentucky in Bowling Green two weeks ago, leading most of the game by double figures and winning by 13."
Middle Tennessee has not lost since the game at then fourth-ranked Tennessee on November 26, reeling off the 15 consecutive wins by an average of 25.2 points per contest. The 15-game streak ties for the third longest in the nation currently with Stanford, and only North Carolina (22) and Duke (21) own longer streaks.
COACHES SUPPORTING CANCER: The Women's Basketball Coaches Association is encouraging its membership, all coaching staffs and game day support staffs to help unify the women's basketball world in a show of support for all coaches in our profession who are battling cancer, including current North Carolina State coach Kay Yow. At games this weekend, January 26-28, all coaches have been asked to wear pink on the bench. The Middle Tennessee coaching staff will participate in the event and encourage all Blue Raider fans to show their support as well at Sunday's game.
AUTOGRAPH SESSION SET FOR JANUARY 28: Fans will have the opportunity to receive autographs from their favorite Middle Tennessee players and coaches after the Blue Raiders take on Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday, January 28. Game time is set for 2 p.m. and the autograph session will follow the game.
