MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - After opening the season last week at the Great Smokies Women's Intercollegiate, the Middle Tennessee women's golf team will head to Norman, Okla., to take on a loaded field at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the Jimmie Austin Golf Club.
Among the eight teams are Arkansas and Ole Miss, who both ranked in the top 50 in 2009. Oklahoma, Tulsa and Texas State should also prove to be formidable, each finishing in the top 100. Redlands Community College came in third place in the National Junior College National Championship last season, and Oklahoma City University earned runner-up honors at the NAIA National Championship.
"I think our team is capable of competing with these schools, but this is another new course for us," said head coach Chris Adams. "Having worked at this particular course in the past, I'm familiar with it, but our team has never played on it. I think this group has some confidence though, and having three days to play 54 holes will certainly help."
Ashley Haggard, Olivia Love, Stephanie Smith, Karisa Akin and Morgan Hale will be competing for the Blue Raiders.
Haggard is coming off a 12th place finish last weekend, which included a career-best five-under 67 in the second round. Both Love and Smith posted 25th place finishes. Akin, a 2010 All-Sun Belt selection, ended the event in 44th place.
Hale, who also earned All-Sun Belt honors in 2010, will be playing in her first tournament of the year this weekend. The senior is only one of three golfers in school history to earn the Sun Belt's Golfer of the Month award, taking home the honors last February.
The Blue Raiders will begin play at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic on Friday. Daily recaps will be available at GoBlueRaiders.com, and live scoring will be provided at www.golfstat.com
