MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee men's tennis is set to open the fall slate, hosting the Dale Short Shootout Sept. 23-25. The Blue Raiders welcome Memphis, Southern Illinois and UAB to the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center this weekend.
"The rookies are going to get their welcome to college tennis at the new Dale Short Shootout," head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "I am really excited about this event. For many years, MT hosted a fall event and I have brought it back in honor of (former Blue Raider) head coach Dale Short. This will be a chance for our fans to see us compete at home this fall and check out the new guys against some solid teams in Memphis, Southern Illinois and UAB. The Shootout will be a learning experience for the whole team as we try to find some doubles chemistry and break the ice with our four new freshmen. Each one of them has a lot of potential."
In addition to the four newcomers – Marlon Brand, Cameron Dickerson, Forrest Edwards and Ettore Zito – Borendame returns three veterans from last year's Sun Belt championship team. Senior Matthew Langley earned the Most Outstanding Player award at last year's conference championship, while sophomore Ben Davis was named to the All-Sun Belt Team. Davis also received his first national ranking earlier this month, coming in at No. 115 in the ITA rankings. Dimitri Pippos returns for his sophomore campaign after finishing last season with a 14-9 singles dual match record.
The tournament begins Friday at 10 a.m. with doubles competition, followed by singles at 2:30 p.m. MT opens against SIU, while Memphis will take on UAB. The teams will play the same schedule on Saturday, with the Blue Raiders facing the Blazers and Tigers playing the Salukis. The tournament wraps up Sunday beginning with doubles at 9 a.m. and concluding with singles at 1:30 p.m. MT closes against Memphis while SIU and UAB will square off.
Admission is free to all matches throughout the tournament.
