Men's Tennis closes out spring trip with 5-2 victory over UC-Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. - In their final match of a week-long spring break trip, the Blue Raiders men's tennis team defeated UC-Irvine, 5-2, on Saturday at the Anteater Tennis Stadium.
"The guys did a great job of bouncing back from yesterday," head coach Jimmy Borendame said.
No. 42 Middle Tennessee now sits at 12-6 while UCI drops to 3-13.
MT took the doubles point by sweeping all three flights, as the No. 58 ranked doubles pair of Ben Davis and Victor Cornea defeated Ryan Cheung and Jonathan Hammel, 8-6.
From there, Christoph Lang and David Fox won their Flight 2 match against Jacob Jung and Caryl Herdandez, 8-3, and Yannick Born and Marlon Brand closed out the doubles portion with a 8-5 topping of Jonathan Poon and Tyler Pham.
In the singles portion, MT picked up wins in Flights 1, 4, 5 and 6, starting with Davis' 6-2, 6-2 victory over Cheung.
Jung defeated Lang, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) in the second flight, and Born fell in the third flight, 6-7 (4-7), 1-6, to Pham.
The Blue Raiders won the remaining matches, as Cornea defeated Hammel, 6-2, 6-1, and Ettore Zito won his Flight 5 match with Hernandez, 6-3, 6-1.
In the final contest of the day, Fox knocked off Poon, 6-4, 6-4.
All-in-all, Borendame considered the trip a success as the Blue Raiders went 2-1 for the week.
"We learned a lot from this week, and have only gotten better here," Borendame said. "We are going to take a few days off of tennis and do some physical conditioning before we make a run at the MT Shootout in two weeks."
The MT Shootout will take place March 30-31 at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center on MT's campus. Illinois State, Troy, South Alabama, Georgia State, Elon, DePaul and Florida Atlantic will join the Blue Raiders in the tournament.
