MT opens spring with 7-0 win over Chattanooga

NASHVILLE - The Middle Tennessee men's tennis team started out the 2014 dual season in convincing fashion, downing Chattanooga 7-0 on Saturday at Nashboro Village.
The Blue Raiders won all nine matches on the day, kicking things off with three victories for the doubles point. The nationally-ranked No. 22 doubles pair of sophomores Victor Cornea and David Fox defeated Jorge Varon and Pavels Grigorjevs at No. 1 doubles, 6-1. Junior Yannick Born and freshman Aaron Jumonville won No. 2 doubles, 6-1, over John Peacey and Luke Saunders.
Two MT players made their Blue Raider debuts on Saturday at No. 3 doubles, as freshman Sam Matheson and junior Victor Hoang defeated Gino Delavalle and Austin Boaz, 6-3.
Four of six singles matches were taken in straight sets, led by Fox at No. 1. The No. 98 singles player in the nation bested Varon (6-2, 6-4.) Cornea won at No. 3 over Saunders (6-5, 6-4), while Matheson defeated Brown at No. 5 (6-1, 6-2), and Jumonville knocked off Peacey at No. 6 (6-1, 6-3.)
Zito (No. 2) and Hoang (No. 4) both rebounded from dropping the first set to outlast their opponents. Zito beat Grigorjevs (2-6, 6-2, 6-3), while Hoang emerged victorious over Delavalle (3-6, 6-1, 6-2.)
The Blue Raiders return to action with a pair of matches next weekend at the ITA Kickoff in Columbus, Ohio. MT will face No. 48 Louisville on Saturday, Jan. 25, before squaring off with either No. 5 Ohio State or No. 57 Denver on Sunday.
