MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team (6-11, 2-2 C-USA) got back to .500 in conference play with a 3-2 win against Louisiana Tech (7-11, 0-5 C-USA) Sunday afternoon at Alumni Memorial Gym.
Junior Chelsea Ross played a spectacular match with a career-high 33 kills to go along with a team-best 17 digs for her eighth double-double of the season. She also passes Tara Miller to move into seventh in program history with 1167 kills.
"Today was one of those matches where we really didn't need to run an offense because the other team was unable to stop Chelsea (Ross)" said Head coach Matt Peck. " We were very fortunate that she came up with a career-best match."
Freshman Haley Morton set a career-high with 33 assists to go along with 11 digs for her third double-double of the season. Senior Ailime de Freitas also set a career-high with 30 assists, while junior Rachel Shaughnessy had herself an all-around performance with nine kills and six blocks, equaling 14 points.
MT jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the fifth set after a La Tech attack error while staying out in front of the Bulldogs the rest of the way. With the score 12-8, Morton found Ross for the next three points for the Blue Raiders to seal the victory.
"We needed to win this match today and the girls played tremendously after the first two sets" said Peck.
The Blue Raiders stormed out to an 18-12 lead before the Bulldogs climbed back in the set to pull within three 22-19. MT stopped any chance of a comeback thanks to Ross recording consecutive kills to give the Blue Raiders the 25-21 game one win and a 1-0 lead.
La Tech would take the next two sets to take a 2-1 lead going into the fourth frame. The Bulldogs finished the second stanza on a 6-1 run while tied, 19-19, to capture game two 25-20.
The Bulldogs were ahead 18-13 in the third set before MT strung together a 7-3 run to cut the lead to one 21-20. That was the closest the Blue Raiders would get as La Tech closed the game with a 4-2 run to capture the set 25-22.
Game four was decided in extra sets while MT came up with the big 28-25 win to force a deciding fifth set. With the set tied 26-26, senior Monét Marshall gave the Blue Raiders a 27-26 lead with a kill before a Bulldog attack error helped MT win the set 28-26.
The Blue Raiders will take a break from conference play on Tuesday when they head to Johnson City Tenn., to play East Tennessee State at 5 p.m.
