CHARLOTTE,N.C. – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team (9-20, 5-10 C-USA) suffered a 3-1 loss to Charlotte (16-16, 5-10 C-USA) at Halton Arena Thursday evening.
Junior Chelsea Ross led MT with 13 kills along with 12 digs for her 14th double-double of the season, while senior Monét Marshall was right behind with 12 kills and a .455 hitting percentage.
Freshman LaDaisha Gillard had a solid performance with eight kills, a team-high six blocks and a .438 hitting clip, and freshman Jacqueline Lux paced the Blue Raiders with 21 digs. Freshman Haley Morton notched a team-best 21 assists.
The 49ers opened the first set with a 7-1 lead while never trailing during the frame. MT cut the deficit to four, 14-10, after an attack error and kills from Marshall and senior Eseta Maka.
That was the closest the Blue Raiders would come as Charlotte went up by as much as nine, 20-11, en route to capturing the first set,25-18.
MT started the second stanza with a 2-0 lead after a kill from Ross and an ace by Jacqueline Lux. Charlotte responded with a 5-0 run to go up by three, 5-3, before eventually grabbing a seven-point lead, 17-10.
A 4-1 run that was sparked by three Charlotte attack errors and a kill from Ross brought MT to within four, 18-14. Charlotte stayed out in front despite MT cutting the gap to two, 24-22, but the 49ers scored on the ensuing rally to go into the locker room with a 2-0 lead.
Down 22-16, MT finished the third frame on an 11-3 run that saw five different Blue Raiders record a kill. With the frame tied, 25-25, a kill from Marshall and a 49er attack error gave MT the 27-25 game-three win to stay alive and force a fourth set.
Both teams went back and forth in the early goings of the fourth frame with the Blue Raiders taking an 11-9 lead after a swat from sophomore Jazmyne Johnson. Charlotte turned around with an 8-1 run to take a commanding 17-12 lead.
It looked like the Blue Raiders were on the comeback trail again closing the gap to three, 21-18, but Charlotte stopped any chances of a fifth set while scoring four of the next six points to win ,25-20, and the match.
MT will hit the road one more time to Bowling Green, Ky., for a 7 p.m., match against rival WKU to conclude the regular season.
