MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee men's tennis will look to build on a strong start to the 2014 fall season by being one of 12 teams competing at the Crimson Tide Four-in-the-Fall event hosted by Alabama, while sending four players to the ITA All-American Championship in Tulsa.
Along with the Blue Raiders and Alabama, Dartmouth, Florida State, Illinois, Notre Dame, Princeton, Rice, Samford, South Alabama, Tulane and UAB will be represented at this tournament.
Seven matches will be guaranteed to each team. The event is a compass draw format with three 16-player singles draws and three 8-team doubles draws. Action will get underway on Friday, September 26 at 9 a.m. with doubles to begin, followed by singles play. More doubles will be played on Saturday at 9 a.m. with singles coming afterwards. Sunday will be the last day of the event and will feature singles play only, beginning at 9 a.m. once again.
Dima Zyhmantovich, Ben Davis and Victor Hoang will be competing in the ITA All-American Championship prequalifying in singles on Saturday, September 27th, while Ettore Zito has qualified for singles and is set to have his first match on Monday. Zito and Davis will also be competing in doubles action at the ITA All-American next week.
For his brilliance at the one spot, Zyhmantovich earned Most Valuable Singles Player honors at the Dale Short Shootout hosted by MT this past weekend.
As of September 8th, Zito is ranked 60th in NCAA D1 singles by the International Tennis Association.
Robin Riethmueller, Yannick Born, Gian Issa, and Miguel Negre Fernandez will look to be very competitive this weekend at the Four-in-the-Fall. The doubles team of Hoang and Riethmueller swept the weekend at the Dale Short Shootout, finishing with three wins and zero losses. Born and Negre Fernandez were 2-1 at the 2 doubles, and Zyhmantovic and Davis were also 2-1 at 1 doubles.
Zyhmantovic, Davis, Hoang, and Riethmueller were all 2-0 when the rain hit Sunday afternoon, effecting their singles matches in which they all were one set away from a clean sweep. Born was on his way to winning his second match of the weekend during this time. Negre Fernandez finished his match just before the rain, bringing his singles record to 3-0 at the six spot.
