Upshaw's double-double not enough for MT
EL PASO, Texas – In front of the biggest crowd the Middle Tennessee (12-10, 5-4 C-USA) has seen on the road, the Blue Raiders fell 83-70 at UTEP (14-7, 6-3 C-USA) on Saturday night.
First half foul trouble crippled the Blue Raiders with 14 team fouls in the half with Perrin Buford and Darnell Harris picking up three fouls and Jacquez Rozier, Reggie Upshaw and Jacob Ivory grabbing two in the half. The Miners recorded 17 points from the charity stripe in the first half alone.
UTEP shot 94 percent from the free-throw line and added to its hot shooting with 55 percent shooting from the field and 86percent from three-point range to hold a 45-38 lead at halftime.
The 45 points by the Miners was the most the Blue Raiders have allowed in a half this season.
Upshaw picked up his first start in seven games and neared a double-double in the first half with 11 points and six boards.
Early in the second half the Blue Raiders were able to hold the Miners scoreless for over four minutes but three turnover by MT in that time did not help them narrow the gap.
The Blue Raiders went on a 7-0 run to bring it a two possession game with 8:13 remaining in the game but were unable to reel it in with UTEP's hot shooting and MT's foul trouble with Buford fouling out earlier in the half.
Upshaw fouled out with three minutes in the game and ended with his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 boards, while adding a team-high three assists.
The last double-double for the Blue Raiders came from Upshaw against Northern Arizona on November 25th.
Despite MT shooting 49 percent from the field, the Miners trumped that shooting 50 percent from the field and 75 percent from three-point range finishing the night 12-of-16 from behind the arc.
Rozier scored double figures for the ninth time this year with 12 points and six rebounds.
This marked the first opponent to score more than 75 on the Blue Raiders this season.
The Blue Raiders will return to the Murphy Center to host Southern Miss on Thursday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. CT.
