Raiders Drop Narrow 3-1 Contest at Memphis

Game Two Tomorrow at 4 p.m.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee (8-5) couldn't get its offense going in a narrow 3-1 loss to Memphis Tuesday night at FedEx Park.
A costly error in the third inning led to all three runs for Memphis, as the Blue Raiders were held to a season-low five hits. The Blue Raiders were also limited to just one run for the third time in the last four games.
"We've changed the lineup the last two games, just trying to get things going the best we can," head coach Jim McGuire said. "But we're just not swinging it very well. Granted, we faced a weekend starter tonight but we've got to get better."
Senior Jared Allen's leadoff solo home run in the second inning was the only bright spot, giving MT the early 1-0 lead. It was the first time in 71 career games that Allen homered in back-to-back games after going deep last Sunday against Iowa.
Junior RHP Heath Slatton was handed the loss in his fourth start, despite striking out a career-high five batters and surrendering just four hits.
Slatton also tied his longest outing by tossing five frames, but it was his throwing error on a bunt that gave Memphis the opportunity to score. A wet playing surface surely played a factor as standing water was visible along the edges of the field.
"I was very proud of the way Heath came out tonight. He was plenty good enough and did what we needed him to do," McGuire said.
Allen also singled to deliver the only multi-hit effort of the night from both sides. Junior Ronnie Jebavy extended his career-high hitting streak to 10 games with a ninth-inning single, while sophomore Brad Jarreau and senior Michael Adkins each collected a hit.
Senior Dustin Delgado was held hitless, but drew a leadoff walk in the fourth to extend his reached-base streak to an impressive 28 games.
Both bullpens were unhittable as go-to reliever Blake Stansberry allowed one Memphis hit in three shutout innings. The freshman sidewinder has tossed eight and two-thirds consecutive innings of scoreless relief for MT.
Middle Tennessee and Memphis will meet Wednesday afternoon in game two of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at FedEx Park.
