Jared Allen scored winning run on wild pitch
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee slid past Old Dominion 5-4 Sunday afternoon when senior Jared Allen scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth. With the win, the Blue Raiders completed the sweep of the Monarchs and improved to 16-10 overall and an impressive 8-1 in league play to remain on top of the Conference USA standings.
MT was two outs away from victory until ODU's Nick Walker took Nathan Foriest deep with a two-run shot in the top of the ninth, giving the Monarchs their first lead of the game 4-3.
The momentum shifted drastically to ODU's side, but Dustin Delgado answered with a leadoff double in the bottom half. With one out, Ronnie Jebavy drew a walk and promptly stole his league-leading 14th base of the season. That forced ODU to intentionally walk Allen, who broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh with a solo homer, to load the bases.
Michael Adkins stepped in and tied it when he sliced the second pitch he saw to right field for an RBI single. Two batters later, a ball in the dirt squirted away from the catcher just far enough to allow a head-first diving Allen to touch home plate in time for the winning run.
Delgado (2-for-5) and Jebavy (2-for-4) each finished with two hits to lead MT, while Allen homered for the sixth time and walked on three occasions and scored three runs. Austin Bryant (1-for-4; RBI), Kevin Dupree (1-for-4), Brad Jarreau (1-for-4) and Adkins (1-for-4; 2 RBIs) each collected one hit.
MT took the early lead on a sacrifice fly from Adkins in the first, and went up 2-0 on Bryant's RBI double with two outs in the fifth.
Starter Garrett Ring struck out a career-high six batters and tied his career-longest outing of five innings in a no-decision effort. Ring pitched into the sixth, but failed to retire the first two batters who ended up scoring later in the inning to tie the game against reliever Sam Alton.
Reliever Kooper Kessler made his second appearance of the weekend and got the final out in the ninth, qualfying him for his second win.
ODU's Conner Myers went 3-for-5 with a double, while Thomas Busbice took his first loss on the mound for the Monarchs.
ODU outhit MT 10-8 and each team made one error defensively. Each team left nine runners on.
The Blue Raiders will wrap up the longest homestand of the season Tuesday night against Austin Peay. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Reese Smith Jr. Field. Next weekend, MT travels to Houston, Texas for a huge C-USA showdown at No. 14 Rice.
