CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Middle Tennessee wrapped up the Hurricane Invitational in impressive fashion by carding the lowest round of the day with a score of 288. The No. 58 Blue Raiders moved up five spots during Wednesday's final round and tied for 10th place with an overall total of 892 (305-299-288).
"I told them to win the day and that's what we did," head coach Chris Adams said. "It was our first tournament of the spring so it was great to see improvement each day, and finish the tournament with the low round of the day."
Junior Avery George fired a tournament-low round 66 (-5) with six birdies over the final 18 holes, tying the second-lowest single round score in program history. It was also George's second-lowest mark of her career as she led the Blue Raiders with a 54-hole total of 4-over par 217.
As a group, MT improved by 11 strokes from the second round and its third-round total 288 is tied for the fifth-lowest single round score all-time put up by an MT squad. It was also the third-best school performance in a third round.
"All five players contributed throughout the week to keep us moving up the leaderboard," Adams said. "It is nice knowing that any of them can go low at any time."
Senior Allie Knight delivered another steady performance with a round of 1-over par 72, placing her tied for 21st. Sophomore Samantha Gotcher tallied a 74 (+3), while junior Maddie Denton shot a 76 (+5) and junior Emily Miller shot a 79 (+8).
"It was not exactly the start we wanted the first two days, but our finish today proved that we are headed in the right direction going into next weekend."
Seventh-ranked Northwestern claimed the tournament title after finishing the tournament with a team total of 859 (280-282-297). Host No. 42 Miami was runner-up and had a team total of 865 (291-284-290), and No. 25 Iowa State finished third with a three round total of 868 (286-292-290).
Middle Tennessee will hit the links again Tuesday, March 10 when it travels to Hawaii for the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.
