Blue Raiders Fall Short Against Iowa
3/7/2015 8:31:00 PM | Baseball
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee fell short against Iowa in both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Reese Smith Jr. Field. The Blue Raiders suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat in the opener, while the Hawkeyes closed out a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.
Middle Tennessee moves to 7-4 on the season and will try to avoid getting swept on Sunday. Game three of the series has a 1 p.m. scheduled first pitch.
"We just couldn't get it going today, but you also got to give credit to their pitchers," head coach Jim McGuire said. "We're going to see this week in and week out in Conference USA. They'll run another good arm out there tomorrow. Hickman, the guy they threw in the second game, will be a good draft pick with a great fastball. But we've got to get used to that. Games are going to be tight so you've got to tough it out."
GAME ONE
Middle Tennessee stranded 11 runners in the series opener and was held to just a run for the first time this season.
The Blue Raiders scored first when Brad Jarreau singled up the middle in the third inning after a leadoff double from Kevin Dupree. Jarreau, Conference USA's leading hitter, was the only MT hitter with two hits as seven of the other eight Raiders in the lineup registered a base knock.
Iowa tied it up during the next half inning and took the lead on MT starter Johnathan Frebis when a leadoff triple in the sixth set up the go-ahead run.
Frebis (2-1) was pinned with the hard-luck loss after giving up six hits and striking out three across six innings of work.
Freshman Blake Stansberry was near perfect in relief, allowing just one hit during three shutout innings.
Jebavy (1-for-2) drew two walks and stole his ninth base of the season. Delgado (1-for-5) singled in his final at-bat to extend his career high reached-base streak to 25 games.
The Blue Raiders put on a defensive clinic with no errors, highlighted by a diving Jebavy catch in the first inning and multiple plays from Austin Bryant at second base.
Iowa starter Tyler Peyton earned his second win as reliever Ryan Erickson picked up the save.
GAME TWO
The Blue Raiders were unable to get anything going offensively, while being held to one run again and a season-low six hits in the nightcap.
Nate Hoffmann (0-1) made his second consecutive weekend start, tossing a season-high six innings with three strikeouts. He surrendered one earned run, but was dealt the loss.
Iowa got on the board with a run in its first at-bat, then both teams pushed one across in the fourth giving the visitors a 2-1 lead.
Bryant (1-for-3; RBI) delivered MT's lone run on a one-out sacrifice fly.
Jebavy went 2-for-4 and extended his hit streak to nine games with a leadoff double in the third. Jake Ingold tallied his team-leading seventh double while Jarreau and Dupree also added singles.
MT's biggest opportunity came with one out in the seventh inning and runners on first and second. With Delgado at the plate, the Blue Raiders called a hit-and-run play that led to a pop up to right field and a runner getting doubled off to end the threat.
Iowa pushed two insurance runs across in each of the eighth and ninth frames.
Blake Hickman (2-0) earned the win for the Hawkeyes, while Connor Grant picked up his second save of the year in three innings of relief.
