Raiders plate six in their final at-bat
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Senior Jake Ingold connected on a walk-off grand slam, capping a six-run ninth inning as Middle Tennessee registered a 9-8 comeback win over Iowa Sunday afternoon.
The Blue Raiders trailed 8-3 entering the final at-bat against a very strong Iowa pitching staff; however, a few walks and an error opened the door for Middle Tennessee (8-4) to complete its largest come-from-behind win of the season.
"We had opportunities all game, we just could not get the big hit," head coach Jim McGuire said. "We just couldn't breakthrough, but then Jake (Ingold) got the huge hit there at the end of the game. A lot of it was with two outs, we had opportunities to do things and just couldn't get over the hump. But we really battled in that last inning against their relievers."
With one out and the bases loaded, Jared Allen drew a walk and Michael Adkins singled in the next at-bat to make it 8-5. After an Iowa pitching change, Ingold came up with two outs, two batters later and crushed a pitch to deep left field sending the MT dugout into a frenzy.
Ingold's second homer of the season is the first walk-off long ball by a Blue Raider since Ethan Thomas walked off against Arkansas State on April 29, 2012. It's also the first Blue Raider grand slam since March 3, 2012 by Johnny Thomas against LA Tech.
Iowa jumped out front with seven runs early on, scoring four in the first and three more in the second on Blue Raiders starter Sam Alton. The junior right hander struggled to get through two innings after a strong showing earlier in the week during Tuesday's rained out game at Tennessee.
Middle Tennessee trailed 7-0 until the fifth when the Blue Raiders plated three runs. Kevin Dupree led off with a double to the gap in left center and Brad Jarreau followed with an RBI groundout. Ronnie Jebavy came up next and put his speed on display with a triple to left field. Jared Allen followed with a line-drive home run to right field, his second of the year.
Garrett Ring was excellent in relief, tying the longest outing of his career with five shutout innings to keep the game from getting out of reach.
The Blue Raiders left two runners in scoring position in the eighth, before finally breaking through in the ninth.
Five Blue Raiders delivered multi-hit efforts, including Jebavy (2-for-5; 2B, 3B), Allen (2-for-4; HR, 3 RBI, BB), Adkins (2-for-5; RBI), Ingold (2-for-4; HR, 4 RBI, BB) and Austin Bryant (2-for-5).
Dustin Delgado made his first appearance out of the leadoff spot, and extended his reached-base streak to 27 games when he drew a ninth-inning walk.
Nathan Foriest (1-0) was credited with the win after pitching the final two innings.
Iowa cycled through six pitchers as Brandon Shulista was charged with the loss. Both teams tallied 11 hits and the Blue Raiders committed a season-high three errors on defense.
Middle Tennessee returns to action with a pair of midweek games against in-state rival Memphis. The Blue Raiders will travel to Memphis for a 6:30 p.m. matchup on Tuesday, and then the two schools will meet in Jackson, Tennessee for another 6:30 p.m. contest inside the Ballpark at Jackson.
