Blue Raiders Go for Series Win Tomorrow
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee softball team (16-24, 3-17 C-USA) will go for its first Conference USA series win tomorrow at 11 a.m., after winning game two against Southern Miss (17-27, 3-14 C-USA) Sunday afternoon at the USM Softball Complex to pick up the split.
MT fell in a low scoring affair in game one, 3-1, before bouncing back in game two with the 5-2 victory. With the win in game two, the Blue Raiders snapped a five-game skid.
Junior Carlie Jenkins had an impressive day at the plate going 5-for-6 (.833) with five singles and an RBI. Freshman Morgan Harris finished 3-for-6 while senior Alma Cortez led the team with two RBIs and two hits.
Junior Kelci Cheney improved to 10-13 on the year after winning game two for MT. She's the first pitcher since 2010 to have double-digit wins inside the circle (Lindsey Vander Lugt).
Game 1: Southern Miss – 3 Middle Tennessee – 1

The Blue Raiders struggled on offense as they could only come away with one run despite racking up seven hits. Both teams wouldn't score until later in the game as the first four and half innings went scoreless.
Southern Miss was the first to score in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run home run by Katie Cleary that gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Middle Tennessee cut the lead to one, 2-1, in the ensuing inning when the Blue Raiders came through with three straight singles on two outs. Following back-to-back singles by Harris and Jenkins, Riddell singled to left field that scored Harris from third.
USM answered in the bottom of the sixth with an insurance run to stretch the lead to 3-1. The Blue Raiders had one more chance in the top of the seventh. However the Golden Eagles retired the side in order to secure the win.
Chocallo took the loss inside the circle, putting in five solid innings of work to allow three runs on eight hits. Senior Caitlin McClure pitched the sixth inning to allow just one hit.
Harris extended her hitting streak to a career-high nine games with a 2-for-2 finish from the plate with a run scored.Riddell accounted for the team's lone RBI with a single.
Birdsong tallied a hit while Nieves,Jenkins and Whaley all recorded singles.
Game 2: Middle Tennessee – 5 Southern Miss - 2

Much like the first contest, the offenses wouldn't come alive until late in the game.
The Blue Raiders got on the board first in the top of the second when Whaley plated Jenkins from third with an RBI single up the middle. Jenkins led off the frame with a single before advancing to second after a Riddell walk and moving to third thanks to a Uselton sac-bunt.
After two-straight scoreless innings, the Blue Raiders scored a run in the fourth after Jenkins hit a two-out single to left field after Harris recorded a single that moved Cortez to third.
Southern Miss struck in the bottom of the fifth to cut the MT lead to one, 2-1. MT responded in the top of the sixth with two runs that was highlighted by Cortez's two-RBI single to right field that drove in Freeman and sophomore Marinna Shadley.
Uselton led off the frame with a single followed by a Whaley sacrifice bunt to move Uselton to second. Freeman then singled and stole second, setting Cortez up in the following at-bat.
The Golden Eagles would threaten one more time in the bottom of the sixth. While already scoring a run to cut the deficit to two, 4-2. USM loaded the bases with two outs and a chance to take the lead, but Cheney forced the big third out with a pop up to the shortstop, further preventing the Golden Eagles from adding anymore damage.
Middle Tennessee tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to three, 5-2. Jenkins singled through the left side for her fourth hit of the game. With
two outs, Uselton got in on the action with a two-out with a single up the middle to drive in Jenkins from second.
USM had one more at-bat to tie the contest up, but the Golden Eagles went three up, three down.
Cheney registered the win in a solid outing as she put in 5.2 innings of work to scatter seven hits and allow two runs. Chocallo recorded her second save of the season pitching the final 1.1 innings of the contest, shutting down the USM lineup allowing just one hit.
Jenkins tied her career-high with four hits and an RBI while Cortez led the team with two RBIs on two hits. Uselton and Whaley both tallied a hit and an RBI, and Freeman posted a single in the win.
"We had our best pitching outings of the year today, " said head coach Jeff Breeden. " (Megan) Chocallo, (Kelci) Cheney and (Caitlin) McClure all kept us in the game long enough for our offense to scratch some runs. We need more energy tomorrow to take the series!"
