Blue Raiders Drop Doubleheader at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Middle Tennessee softball team (13-19, 1-13 C-USA) fell in both contests to Charlotte (20-15, 7-4 C-USA) Friday afternoon at D.L. Phillips Complex.
MT suffered a 7-1 setback in game one before falling short in game two, 3-2.
Senior Alma Cortez paced the MT offense through both games finishing 4-for-7 (.571) with two doubles and two RBIs, which both came in the second contest.
Junior Kiarra Freeman went 2-for-4 from the dish while junior Randi Cookus and freshman Morgan Harris both notched two hits.Harris accounted for MT's other RBI on the day.
Game 1: Charlotte – 7 Middle Tennessee – 1
The Blue Raiders were unable to build off the 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when they struck first as both teams went scoreless in the first three frames.
Harris knocked in freshman teammate Cor'Nisha Birdsong from third with the bases loaded thanks to a two-out RBI single to left field to give MT a 1-0 lead.
Birdsong led off the inning with a walk and a stolen base before Cortez singled to right field, advancing Birdsong to third followed by senior Samantha Nieves loading the bases with a fielder's choice.
MT struggled on offense the rest of the way with just two hits in the final three innings while Charlotte scored seven runs in the final three frames.
The 49ers took a commanding 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the fourth before adding two runs in the fifth, and then tacking on three more in the sixth go ahead, 7-1.
Junior Kelci Cheney fell to 7-11 inside the pitching circle in her 16th start of the season. The Terrell, Texas native pitched five innings, allowing five runs (three earned), six hits and striking out four batters. Senior Caitlin McClure came in for a brief stint to give up two runs and a hit. Sophomore Megan Chocallo came in for the final 2.1 innings and allowed zero runs.
Cookus paced the team going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles while Harris accounted for the team's lone RBI to go along with a hit. Nieves extended her hitting streak to a career-best nine games with a hit, and Cortez tallied a single as well.
Eight different batters notched a hit for the 49ers with Jackie Kleinsmith posting two RBIs to lead the 49ers. Lexi Betancourt pitched a complete game for the hosts, forfeiting a run and striking out 11 batters to improve to 13-10.
Game 2: Charlotte – 3 Middle Tennessee – 2
The Blue Raiders performed better in the second contest but fell just short with a chance to tie in the final frame.
Trailing 3-1 in the top of the seventh, Griffith led off the frame with a single through the left side before advancing to second off a sacrifice bunt by Freeman. With two down, Cortez tallied one of her three hits with an RBI double to drive in Griffith. MT had a chance to tie in the next at-bat, but the 49ers picked up the final out to secure the win.
Charlotte scored two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead after a pair of home runs by Chelsea Lisikatos and Jessica Plemmons.
MT cut the deficit to one, 2-1, in the top of the fifth thanks to an RBI double by Cortez to plate Freeman. Freeman led off the inning with a single through the left side that set up Cortez for the score.
The 49ers later added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to two, 3-1, before the final frame.
Cortez tied her career-high with a 3-for-4 finish, two doubles and two RBIs. Freeman went 2-for-2 from the dish and a run scored while Harris, Shadley and Griffith all tallied hits.
Chocallo pitched a solid five innings to allow three runs (two earned) and five hits. Freshman Makenzie Prince came in for an inning of relief to allow zero runs and zero hits.
Betancourt recorded the victory inside the circle for the hosts as she pitched another complete game and struck out nine batters. She limited a Blue Raider offense to just three runs on the day after MT came into the game averaging 6.4 runs over the past five games.
