MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee softball team (15-19) dealt Tennessee State (9-25) a 4-0 shutout Tuesday evening at Blue Raider Softball Field.
With the victory, the Blue Raiders improve to 4-1 during midweek games and 4-1 against in-state opponents. It's also the third win at home this season, surpassing last year's win total at Blue Raider Softball Field.
MT also took advantage with runners on bases as they hit 5-for-13 with runners on while hitting 3-for-9 when threatening to score.
Junior Kelci Cheney pitched six innings of shutout ball en route to her ninth victory of the season. The right-hander scattered four hits and struckout five batters and controlled the pace of the game all evening.
The trio of freshman Cor'Nisha Birdsong, senior Alma Cortez and junior Carlie Jenkins paced the MT offense with a combined 6-for-7 performance with three RBIs, two triples, four runs scored and a pair of stolen bases as all three went for two hits.
Cortez knocked in two RBIs for a team-high with a triple while Birdsong recorded a triple and stole a pair of bases. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native is tied for second all-time for the most swipes in a single season. Junior Megan Griffith tallied a double with an RBI, and freshman Morgan Harris posted a single.
Middle Tennessee scored right from the beginning as Birdsong led off with a triple to right field followed by an RBI single by Cortez that extended her hitting streak to a season-high six games.
All the Blue Raiders needed was a three-run third inning with four hits to give themselves a commanding 4-0 cushion. Much like the first inning, Birdsong led off with a bunt single and Cortez took a turn with a triple of her own to right field to drive Birdsong home.
In the ensuing at-bat, Jenkins notched her 33rd RBI of the season with a single through the right side to plate Cortez. Later in the frame with one out, Griffith sent an RBI double to right field to score Jenkins.
The Tigers didn't threaten much on the offensive side until the fourth inning when they loaded the bases with two outs, but Cheney forced a groundout to sophomore Austyn Whaley to end the inning to keep the shutout going.
Sophomore Megan Chocallo came in for the final inning of relief to secure the victory for the Blue Raiders.
The Blue Raiders will have a quick turnaround tomorrow when they head to Decatur, Ala., for a 6:30 p.m., contest against 2014 national runner-up and No. 6/7 Alabama.
