MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A second consecutive former Ohio Valley foe enters the Murphy Center Saturday as Middle Tennessee hosts Tennessee State at 6:30 p.m.
The Blue Raiders are coming off of an 87-81 win against Murray State to push them to 2-0 while the Tigers stand at 3-0 after sweeping the Cable Car Classic in Santa Clara, Calif.
"I think Tennessee State has started up right where they left off last year," Head Coach Kermit Davis said. "That was a great tournament championship to win the Cable Car out on the west coast and to beat Santa Clara on their home floor to win the championship game.
"They've got really good balance, good inside-outside scoring, and the thing they're really doing well is defending and holding opponents to under 40 percent."
Middle Tennessee and Tennessee State will be meeting for the 55th time in the history of the series, now playing for the seventh consecutive season dating back to 2010.
The Blue Raiders have won 10 in a row against the Tigers and hold a 38-16 series advantage all-time, while Davis holds a 9-0 record against TSU.
Despite the uneven nature of the results in recent years, Davis said the rivalry is definitely on the upswing.
"I don't think there is any question. I think [Head Coach] Dana [Ford] has a chance along with Murray State and Belmont to win the Ohio Valley Conference," Davis said. "I think we're playing the three best teams in that league this season and we expect a difficult game. I think it's a good series for both schools."
The Blue Raiders enter the matchup against the Tigers with a pair of the top scorers in Conference USA in JaCorey Williams (21.5) and Reggie Upshaw (18.0). Upshaw also stands second in C-USA through two games in rebounds with 10.5 per game.
Tennessee State will be led by Cable Car Classic MVP Tahjere McCall, a 6-foot-5 senior guard who is tops on the team in scoring (15.3), assists (4.7), steals (3.7) and blocks (1.0).
