MT drops 10-4 decision to WKU
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Middle Tennessee was unable to even its series against rival WKU after dropping a 10-4 decision, and the series, to the Hilltoppers here Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Raiders (12-11, 1-4) pitching staff had difficulty consistently controlling the WKU (13-9, 2-3) lineup. Middle Tennessee starter Tyler Troutt gave up eight hits in 4-1/3 innings of work, and five different Blue Raider relief pitchers surrendered eight base knocks. That, coupled with nine walks, led to a tough afternoon.
"It got away from us late," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "We were hanging in there and battling, but we had a tough inning late and it got away. It's a big, big game for us (Sunday). We need to come out and play better. We have to come out and get better showing improvement."
Drew Huff, one of three freshmen in the Blue Raider lineup, was the only Middle Tennessee player with a multi-hit game. Huff was 2-for-4 with one double. Brad Jarreau connected for his third home run of the season, and freshman Austin Dennis drove in two runs.
The game was competitive until the bottom of the seventh when WKU broke it open.
After falling behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first, Middle Tennessee cut the deficit in half with one run in the top of the second. Kevin Dupree coaxed a one-out walk and motored to third on Huff's double to right field. Outfielder Kaleb King lofted a fly ball to deep right field to score Dupree with the Blue Raiders' first run.
Jarreau's third home run of the season, a massive blast over the fence in left field, tied the score 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
Middle Tennessee gained the lead with timely hitting and taking advantage of the Hilltoppers' mistakes in the top of the fifth. King reached on an error to start the inning and Riley Delgado kept the inning alive with a two-out walk. Dennis came through in the clutch, delivering a sharp single to left, and sending King plateward for a 3-2 advantage.
The lead was short lived.
WKU scored two in the bottom half of the fifth inning to go back on top, 4-3, and pushed the lead to 5-3 with a run in the bottom of the sixth.
Middle Tennessee pulled to within one run in the top of the seventh when Dennis collected his second RBI. The outfielder drove a ball to center field for a sac fly to score Kevin Sullivan, who had led off the inning with a single, and cut the deficit to 5-4.
Just when Middle Tennessee got back into the game, the bullpen was unable to control the Hilltoppers' batting order and keep the game within reach. WKU scored four runs to push its lead to 9-4 and break the game open in the bottom of the seventh.
Middle Tennessee will look to salvage the final game of the series when Jake Wyrick goes to the mound Sunday. First pitch is 1 p.m.
