MT drops both games as they can't get the offense going
HUNTINGTON, W.VA. – Middle Tennessee (23-23, 6-8) drops both games of a double-header to Marshall (24-23, 8-9) Saturday. The Raiders fell 8-0 in five innings in game one, then lost game two 6-0 as Marshall starter Jordan Dixon kept MT's hitters guessing all day.
Dixon threw both games, and shut the Raiders out for 12.0 innings, allowed only four hits, and struck out 22 through the two games.
Deja Portillo earned two hits in game one to lead MT as she was 2-for-2. In game two Precious Birdsong and Carlie Jenkins each grabbed base hits.
Birdsong showed her patience as she walked to lead off game one, stole second, then advanced to third when Portillo singled to the pitcher. But with runners on the corners and no outs, Dixon struck out Morgan Harris and Dani Munoz in back-to-back at bats. Then Portillo was caught off first base and thrown out just before Birdsong crossed the plate and the Raiders squandered a great opportunity.
Kelci Cheney began the bottom of the first well as she struck out the Conference USA stolen base leader Kaelynn Greene to get things started. But Morgan Zerkle followed with her second home run of the season, a shot to straight away center, and Marshall had a 1-0 lead after an inning of play.
Marshall came right back in the second as Elicia D'Orazio earned an RBI single that brought home Katalin Lucas. Kaylynn Greene followed with a base hit, then Greene and D'Orazio pulled off a double steal that allowed D'Orazio to score on an error by Raider catcher Harris. After just two innings Marshall led the game 3-0.
The Thundering Herd added two more in the third as Lucas homered to left field. Hayden Ellis scored on the two-run shot and Marshall quickly had control 5-0 after just three innings.
Middle Tennessee had no answer for Dixon all game as she struck out 10 Raiders in 5.0 innings and threw a two-hit shutout. The only real blemishes appeared to be an error and Carlie Jenkins reaching on an illegal pitch.
Marshall finished off the Raiders in the fifth as they plated three more runs for the run rule victory in the first game.
Game two began slowly as the teams were scoreless through two and half innings. Marshall loaded the bases in the bottom of the third with one out. Taylor McCord then followed with a base hit that scored two, Greene scored on a wild pitch, and Summer Collins scored on a Raquel Escareno sacrifice fly and the Herd had a 4-0 lead after the third.
In the fourth Madi Marshall scored on a Greene ground out. McCord followed with an RBI base hit that scored D'Orazio to increase and the Herd lead to 6-0 going to the fifth.
Dixon was great again in the circle for Marshall as she earned another complete game two-hit shutout. Dixon struck out 12 more Raiders in game two as she bumped her total up to 22 for the day.
The series finale is scheduled for an 11 a.m. central first pitch as MT will attempt to take one of the three games against Marshall as each team is continuing to fight for a conference tournament spot.
