MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – In Conference USA's ongoing release of the 2017-18 Preseason All-Conference team, Blue Raider senior Giddy Potts was announced Monday as the sixth member of the 10-man list.
The Athens, Ala., native is the leading returner in points (15.3) and rebounds (5.3) per game for the Blue Raiders while also leading the team in steals (47) a season ago.
The sharp-shooting guard shot 48.2 percent from the field in 2016-17 and boasts a career 3-point percentage of over 42 percent.
"Giddy will be the first one to tell you that the awards that really matter are the ones at the end of the season, but he's very deserving of this recognition," Head Coach Kermit Davis said. "He's looking forward to an excellent senior year and his leadership has been unbelievable this offseason."
Potts was named Third Team All-C-USA following his junior campaign in which he also won Conference USA Tournament MVP honors. He averaged 19.3 points and six boards per contest during the conference tournament, scoring a career-high 30 points in the title game against Marshall.
During his senior campaign Potts will be chasing a number of Middle Tennessee career marks. The four-year Blue Raider needs 569 points this season to surpass all-time scoring leader Desmond Yates (1,775) after totaling 552 points a season ago.
Potts will almost certainly overtake the career 3-pointers made title this season – needing just 22 trifectas to pass up Robert Taylor (222) – and is 24 career wins shy of the mark set by Reggie Upshaw (99) last March.
Despite all of the career milestones within reach, the senior's main goal remains to continue making noise as a team in 2017-18 as the Blue Raiders have done in each of the last two NCAA Tournaments.
"The career numbers are definitely something I would like to reach," Potts stated. "Ed (Simpson) and I have both set the goal of surpassing Reggie's win total this season which would mean another 25-win season as a team.
"But the main goal is still to win the league and return to the NCAA Tournament for the third year in a row and keep moving this program forward."
