MT off to best start in 19 years
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee extended its all-time record against in-state foe Lipscomb to 11-0 Sunday with a 72-48 win at the Murphy Center that also enabled the first 3-0 start since 1998.
With junior Preseason Conference USA Player of the Year Alex Johnson sidelined for the second straight game, the Lady Raiders (3-0) weren't troubled by the Lady Bison (1-4).
They jumped to a 19-5 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, leading by as many as 34 points in the rout.
"I was more pleased in our execution tonight than I was in the last game," MT Head Coach Rick Insell said. "This is a tough team to play … their record doesn't show it, but they can shoot the heck out of the basketball.
"Overall, I'm pretty pleased with our basketball team."
It was Middle Tennessee's defensive pressure that led to the quick start.
Lipscomb made just two of its nine shot attempts in the first quarter and never found a shooting touch, finishing 32 percent (16-of-50) from the field. The Lady Raiders also forced 13 turnovers, leading to 17 points.
"I thought we had a good maximum effort out of Kyla [Allison] and Katie [Collier], in particular, defensively," Insell said. "We want to treat every game like we're playing Connecticut … and imagining how focused we would be. That's the focus and intensity that we want."
On the offensive side, MT's post presence left plenty of shooters open for 3-pointers, and they knocked them down in bunches.
Of the Lady Raiders' 24 made field goals, 12 came from three. They finished 12-of-22 from distance (55 percent).
It was a balanced scoring effort for Middle Tennessee, also, with 10 players knocking in at least a point and seven girls hitting a 3-pointer.
"Coach has stressed, especially this week, that if they leave you open, you have the green light to shoot it," senior Abbey Sissom said. "It was really awesome to see a lot of us go out there and take those open shots and knock them down."
Senior Rebecca Reuter led the way in the scoring department with 16 (5-of-9). She also had five rebounds and three assists and hit a team-high 3-of-5 3-pointers.
Sissom finished with 12 points, four assists, four rebounds and two steals, while sophomore Kyla Allison had 10 points. Senior Gabby Lyon rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 to go with five boards.
Freshman Jadona Davis also had eight points and two blocks in the first 12 minutes played in her MT career.
"I was pleased with what we got out of Jadona out there," Insell said. "She's a very talented young lady, I've said that. We just have to get her playing harder and running the floor a little better, and we'll do that."
The Lady Raiders will have a week to build on the win and heal their conference player of the year candidate before taking the court again. They'll travel to UNC Asheville on Sunday, Nov. 26, for a 1 p.m. CT tipoff. It will be the first of a three-game road swing that includes contests at Ole Miss and Georgia Tech.
"We're going to get a lot of good practices in and get ready for three big away games in a row," Reuter said. "We have to get ready for those, because those away games are going to be tough."
