Strong defensive effort not enough in 48-45 setback

Louro paces team with 15 points, 9 rebounds
ATLANTA – Middle Tennessee's strong defense gave the team a chance to score Power-5 road win but the Lady Raiders were unable to generate enough offense in a 48-45 setback against Georgia Tech here Sunday.
The Lady Raiders (4-2) held the Yellow Jackets (8-1) to 38 percent (17-of-44) shooting from the field, including 20 percent (2-of-10) from three-point range, while also forcing 24 Georgia Tech turnovers. It marked the third time Middle Tennessee has held an opponent to less than 50 points in six games this season.
Almost half of Middle Tennessee's points (21) were generated off of those Tech turnovers.
The problem for Middle Tennessee was being equally guilty of miscues as it committed 22 turnovers; however, Georgia Tech only managed 14 points off of those floor mistakes.
"We had a great opportunity to get a quality road win here but the bottom line is we didn't protect the basketball," Lady Raider Head Coach Rick Insell said. "We made too many floor mistakes. We have to do a better job of handling pressure with our guards. Don't get me wrong. Our young ladies played hard and gave tremendous effort. They were drenched coming off the court and they are very disappointed in this loss, as am I."
Jess Louro led the Lady Raiders with 15 points and nine rebounds. She also added five steals and two assists in 38 minutes of action. Alex Johnson added 13 points as she continues to work her way back into form. Johnson logged a season-high 22 minutes in her third game since returning from an ankle injury sustained in the opener.
Eight of the nine Lady Raiders who played scored but outside of Louro and Johnson, no one scored more than four points.
Georgia Tech led 22-10 with 2:51 remaining in the first half, but Middle Tennessee finished the half on a 5-0 run to pull to within seven at intermission. That momentum carried into the second half as the Lady Raiders started the third quarter on a 5-0 run.
By the 7:52 mark of the fourth quarter Middle Tennessee had tied the game, 30-30 on a pair of Johnson free throws. The game remained nip-and-tuck down the stretch, but Georgia Tech was able to hold off the rally and secure the home win.
Middle Tennessee will return to action when it faces Coppin State in the annual Murfreesboro City Schools Education Day game Tuesday at 7 p.m. It will be the team's third game in six days.
